Connie Ferguson tells the story of how she met Shona Ferguson
Connie Ferguson has shared the touching story of how she met her late husband, Shona Ferguson, and reflected on the deep pain of losing him. During a recent interview on 947 with Thando Thabethe, the actress and TV producer looked back on the unexpected first meeting that changed her life forever. She also spoke honestly about life after Shona’s passing and why she still loves talking about him years later. HOW CONNIE FERGUSON MET SHONA Connie Ferguson recently appeared on 947 with Thando, where she spoke to actress and radio host Thando Thabethe about one of the most important moments of her life. She revealed that she met Shona Ferguson in July 2001. Their first meeting happened at her own home. However, Shona was not there to visit her. Instead, he had dropped off people he knew at her house. “Funny story, he was actually dropping people off at my house. He didn’t know me and I didn’t know him. He didn’t even know my sister but he knew my sister’s friends, those were the people he was dropping off at my house. I was way back in my bedroom when I just heard this male voice in my kitchen.” Connie Ferguson said she immediately became curious because there were no men living in the house. She laughed as she remembered that special day. “I love this story, it’s so romantic.” She walked down the passage from her bedroom and saw a man standing with his back turned while wearing a suit. “I heard his laugh. You know that laugh that makes you laugh and you don’t know what people are laughing about? It’s that laugh.” Moments later, Shona turned around and introduced himself. “He turns around with a bright smile. Sho had the brightest smile and then he goes, ‘Hi, I’m Shona.’” View this post on Instagram A post shared by 947 (@947joburg) LOVE AT FIRST MEETING Connie introduced herself and quickly noticed something unexpected. She was surprised that Shona spoke fluent Setswana. She did not expect him to speak the language so well. The next day, they went out for dinner with the same group of friends. Their relationship moved quickly as by October 2001 Shona had already paid lobola and on 30 November 2001 they got married. The couple built a beautiful family together. They welcomed their daughter, Alicia Ferguson. Connie’s eldest daughter, Lesedi Ferguson, also became an important part of their close-knit family. Together, they founded Ferguson Films. The production company created successful television dramas and telenovelas, including Rockville, The Queen and Kings of Jo’Burg. CONNIE FERGUSON COPES WITH SHONA’S LOSS Connie Ferguson also opened up about losing her husband in 2021. She described his passing as something she never expected. “It was very unexpected, it was something that someone my age would never consider would happen to them. It wasn’t just losing my husband for me, it was losing my best friend, it was losing my partner.” She explained that they shared every part of their lives. “People talk about he had his life and I had my own life and then we come together, no, our lives were intertwined completely. For me it was a jerking new reality, I didn’t know how to process it, for the longest time I didn’t know how to process it.” Simple routines became difficult. The couple used to make the bed together every morning. After Shona’s passing, Connie had to face that routine alone. Even preparing breakfast reminded her that he was no longer there. KEEPING SHONA’S MEMORY ALIVE Although several years have passed, Connie Ferguson says her love for Shona has never faded. She still speaks about him with warmth and affection. “It’s been five years this year, even now, five years later I talk about him like it was yesterday. I love talking about him.” Even after his passing, Connie continues to honour his memory by sharing the moments that made their relationship so special.

Orlando Pirates’ third-choice striker scores in Spain against Cordoba
Orlando Pirates fielded three debutants from the start, with Sbangani Zulu partnering the defence, while Ghampani Lungu and Mpho Padime occupied the wings. Patrick Maswanganyi also operated in the number 10 role previously occupied by Relebohile Mofokeng. The Buccaneers dominated the opening five minutes with a mixture of attacks through the middle, out wide and over the top. They also pressed aggressively, forcing Córdoba CF into a compact mid-block. ORLANDO PIRATES 1-1 CORDOBA CF However, the hosts gradually settled into the contest. Córdoba created their first chance in the eighth minute before another long-range effort drifted wide five minutes later after Pirates lost possession in midfield. Although the Spanish side controlled large spells of the first half, Maswanganyi stepped up with an influential display. The attacking midfielder repeatedly dropped deep to help Simphiwe Selepe, dictated play from midfield and remained involved by delivering corners and testing the defence from distance. CÓRDOBA TAKE CONTROL Córdoba CF continued to create the better chances as the Betway Premiership champions dropped into a low defensive block. The Spanish side missed a golden opportunity in the 26th minute after forcing a turnover high up the pitch. Just two minutes later, another clear opening went begging when an unmarked volley inside the penalty area flew over the crossbar. Orlando Pirates finally responded in the 29th minute after winning possession high up the field, but Abdoulaye Mariko dragged his effort wide. As the first half progressed, the South Africans improved and found more space in attack. However, the new-look front line lacked chemistry, with several attacks breaking down because of poor combinations and mistimed runs. Youngster Mpho Padime impressed before the break. The winger carried the ball confidently, retained possession under pressure, switched play effectively and also managed an effort on goal. BOITUMELO RADIOPANE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE Bucs began the second half brightly once again. Debutants Neo Rapoo and Bohlale Ngwato strengthened the left flank after coming on, helping the visitors dominate the opening stages and force several saves from the Córdoba goalkeeper. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made seven substitutions in the 60th minute as he rotated his squad to build match fitness. The changes disrupted Orlando Pirates’ rhythm and allowed the Spanish outfit to regain control. Córdoba CF broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Javi Antras reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box before volleying into the net. The Buccaneers responded seven minutes later. Boitumelo Radiopane pressed the goalkeeper aggressively, won possession and calmly slid the ball home to make it 1-1. Although Córdoba enjoyed another spell of pressure after the equaliser, Bucs defended well and looked dangerous on the counter. ORLANDO PIRATES FINISH STRONGLY The visitors almost snatched victory in the 82nd minute. Tshepang Moremi found himself through on goal after a swift counter-attack, but his shot was blocked by a recovering defender. The Sea Robbers finished the match on the front foot and kept Córdoba CF pinned back during the closing stages. The match ended 1-1, giving Ouaddou plenty of positives to build on ahead of the remaining four pre-season friendlies in Spain.
