She continued to wish her legendary mother, Linah Ngcobo, a blessed birthday. “Mama @mamngcobo, we hope you’ve had the most beautiful and blessed birthday. Connie Ferguson tells the story of how she met Shona Ferguson
Connie Ferguson has shared the touching story of how she met her late husband, Shona Ferguson, and reflected on the deep pain of losing him. During a recent interview on 947 with Thando Thabethe, the actress and TV producer looked back on the unexpected first meeting that changed her life forever. She also spoke honestly about life after Shona’s passing and why she still loves talking about him years later. HOW CONNIE FERGUSON MET SHONA Connie Ferguson recently appeared on 947 with Thando, where she spoke to actress and radio host Thando Thabethe about one of the most important moments of her life. She revealed that she met Shona Ferguson in July 2001. Their first meeting happened at her own home. However, Shona was not there to visit her. Instead, he had dropped off people he knew at her house. “Funny story, he was actually dropping people off at my house. He didn’t know me and I didn’t know him. He didn’t even know my sister but he knew my sister’s friends, those were the people he was dropping off at my house. I was way back in my bedroom when I just heard this male voice in my kitchen.” Connie Ferguson said she immediately became curious because there were no men living in the house. She laughed as she remembered that special day. “I love this story, it’s so romantic.” She walked down the passage from her bedroom and saw a man standing with his back turned while wearing a suit. “I heard his laugh. You know that laugh that makes you laugh and you don’t know what people are laughing about? It’s that laugh.” Moments later, Shona turned around and introduced himself. “He turns around with a bright smile. Sho had the brightest smile and then he goes, ‘Hi, I’m Shona.’” View this post on Instagram A post shared by 947 (@947joburg) LOVE AT FIRST MEETING Connie introduced herself and quickly noticed something unexpected. She was surprised that Shona spoke fluent Setswana. She did not expect him to speak the language so well. The next day, they went out for dinner with the same group of friends. Their relationship moved quickly as by October 2001 Shona had already paid lobola and on 30 November 2001 they got married. The couple built a beautiful family together. They welcomed their daughter, Alicia Ferguson. Connie’s eldest daughter, Lesedi Ferguson, also became an important part of their close-knit family. Together, they founded Ferguson Films. The production company created successful television dramas and telenovelas, including Rockville, The Queen and Kings of Jo’Burg. CONNIE FERGUSON COPES WITH SHONA’S LOSS Connie Ferguson also opened up about losing her husband in 2021. She described his passing as something she never expected. “It was very unexpected, it was something that someone my age would never consider would happen to them. It wasn’t just losing my husband for me, it was losing my best friend, it was losing my partner.” She explained that they shared every part of their lives. “People talk about he had his life and I had my own life and then we come together, no, our lives were intertwined completely. For me it was a jerking new reality, I didn’t know how to process it, for the longest time I didn’t know how to process it.” Simple routines became difficult. The couple used to make the bed together every morning. After Shona’s passing, Connie had to face that routine alone. Even preparing breakfast reminded her that he was no longer there. KEEPING SHONA’S MEMORY ALIVE Although several years have passed, Connie Ferguson says her love for Shona has never faded. She still speaks about him with warmth and affection. “It’s been five years this year, even now, five years later I talk about him like it was yesterday. I love talking about him.” Even after his passing, Connie continues to honour his memory by sharing the moments that made their relationship so special.
