Man burnt to death in Katlehong shack blaze
A man in his thirties was burnt to death when a two‑room shack caught fire in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg. The blaze occurred in Moleleki Extension 2, Katlehong, with firefighters battling to prevent it from spreading to neighbouring homes. Shack fire City of Ekurhuleni Disaster & Emergency Management Services spokesperson Tikkie MacDonald said they responded to the fire during the early hours of Saturday morning, 18 July 2026. Firefighters from the Zonkezizwe Fire Station were dispatched at approximately 04:18 to a shack fire in Moleki Extension 2. On arrival, crews found a 2-bedroom shack well alight with community members on scene using the bucket brigade method to try to extinguish the fire. MacDonald said firefighters acted swiftly to extinguish the fire and successfully prevented the flames from spreading to two other shacks in the same yard. “During damping down operations, the charred body of a male, believed to be in his early thirties, was discovered inside the shack and was declared dead on scene by Gauteng Emergency Medical Services paramedics.” Cause of fire MacDonald said the cause of the fire is currently unknown. “Fire Investigators have been called to the scene to determine the cause. The body was removed by Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services and the scene handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.” Winter The City of Ekurhuleni has urged residents to exercise extreme caution with open flames, candles, and electrical connections, especially during winter. For life-threatening emergencies, contact the City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Management Services at 011 458 0911. Currie Cup recap: Wins for Sharks, Stormers
The opening matches of the 2026 Currie Cup Premier Division took place late Friday, with the new-look Sharks and Stormers teams recording wins first-up. The men from Durban edged the nuggety Pumas 26-24 in Mbombela, an important away win. Winger Lyle Matthews scored a hat-trick of tries in the opening 40 minutes for the Sharks to lead 19-5 at the break. The home team, as they do in Mbombela, fought back strongly in the second period but the Sharks held on for the win. The Sharks’ other try was scored by Kerron van Vuuren. The Pumas’ four tries were scored by Lundi Msenge, Chyle van Zyl, Tino Swanepoel and JJ Scheepers. Close call in Cape Town The rebranded Stormers XXIII, who were formerly Western Province, also won a tight opener, edging Griquas 25-19 in Cape Town. Scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer scored a 79th-minute try to help his team start on a winning note. It was a ding-dong affair, with both teams losing men to ill-discipline and dangerous play. Griquas finished the match with 13 men on the field. The Stormers’ tries came from Vernon Paulo, Mfundo Ndhlovu and Ungerer, while Sako Makata, Lourens Oosthuizen and Tiaan Lange scored tries for Griquas. There are two more Premier Division matches on Sunday. The Cheetahs host the Lions (1pm) and Boland welcome the Bulls (3.05pm).

Carte Blanche coming up: Toxic Potjies?
The Sunday, 19 July episode of Carte Blanche raises concerns over the safety of cheap cast iron potjie replicas commonly sold in both rural and urban communities, warning that they could pose a serious public health risk. The programme reports that the pots, which are smelted from scrap metal and widely used by informal traders and community feeding schemes, may leach harmful lead into food. Recent studies also suggest that artisans involved in making the cookware, as well as people who regularly cook and eat from the pots, are being exposed to dangerous levels of lead. The investigation explores how an everyday cooking utensil became a potential health hazard and questions whether authorities are doing enough to regulate the trade and protect vulnerable communities. Credibility among South African viewers Carte Blanche is a South African investigative journalism television series that airs on M-Net every Sunday at 19:00. Its first episode aired on 21 August 1988 and over the last 34-plus years has earned credibility among South African viewers for its investigation into corruption, consumer issues, and current events.
