Mandela Day protests shut down Kliptown and Pimville: These roads are affected
As the country celebrates Nelson Mandela Day, service delivery protests over prolonged power outages have erupted in Kliptown and Pimville. The protest action on Saturday, 18 July 2026, has shut down Klipspruit Valley Road in Pimville and Kliptown, forcing a full closure between the Modjaji and Union Avenue traffic circles as law enforcement scrambles to manage traffic and restore order. Protest Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla said it is alleged that local residents are protesting over prolonged power outages experienced in the area. “Law Enforcement has been informed and is actively deployed to the area to monitor the situation, manage the traffic flow, and ensure public safety.” Affected roads Motorists travelling through or near the Pimville and Kliptown areas are strongly urged to avoid Klipspruit Valley Road entirely and use the following alternative routes to bypass the gridlock: Motorists coming from the north or south can divert via Chris Hani Road to navigate around the Pimville/Kliptown bottlenecks. Utilise Moroka Nancefield Road as an alternative link to bypass the closed circles. Commuters heading south/east can use Main Road through Eldorado Park to reconnect to major routes. For those travelling further west or north-west, Elias Motsoaledi Road provides a viable bypass around the affected arterial zones. “Please exercise caution when approaching these areas. Expect delays on all connected routes. Do not attempt to force your way through road blockages,” Fihla said Fihla added that further updates will be communicated as the situation develops. Service delivery Last week, service delivery protests over power outages brought parts of Soweto to a standstill, with major intersections in Pimville and Dlamini barricaded and traffic diverted as law enforcement worked to restore order. Fihla said information gathered on the ground indicated that residents in these areas took to the streets to protest ongoing electricity and power supply outages in the community.

‘Great innings ends’: Cricket mourns West Indies great Garfield Sobers
Garry Sobers, the West Indies all-rounder regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time, has died at the age of 89. The Barbados-born player featured in 93 Tests between 1954 and 1974, amassing 8,032 runs and taking 235 wickets. “A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers,” West Indies Cricket posted on X on Friday above a photograph of him titled “Legend, Icon, Hero”. The versatile Sobers was an entertaining left-handed batter who could bowl spin and seam, and was an exceptional fielder. He made his Test debut as a 17-year-old against England in 1954. At the age of 21, Sobers broke Len Hutton’s record for the highest individual Test score by making 365 not out against Pakistan. His record would last until another West Indian master, Brian Lara, made 375 against England in 1994, with Sobers on hand to celebrate. The all-rounder averaged an impressive 57.78 with the bat and 34.03 with the ball in Test cricket. He also captained West Indies in 39 Tests between 1965 and 1972, winning nine and losing 10. In a career filled with extraordinary feats, Sobers became the first player to hit six sixes in one over in first-class cricket, off Glamorgan’s Malcolm Nash when playing county cricket for Nottinghamshire. He was honoured as one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the 20th century alongside Australia great Donald Bradman, Jack Hobbs, Viv Richards and Shane Warne. The late Bradman paid the ultimate tribute to Sobers: “He is, in my opinion, the greatest cricketer of all time.” ‘Towering figure’ West Indies CEO Chris Dehring described Sobers as a “towering figure whose influence on our game and our region can never be overstated”. “Sir Garfield was more than the greatest all-round cricketer the world has ever seen,” he said in a statement. “He was the embodiment of West Indies cricket at its finest – bold, brilliant, innovative and unapologetically excellent. His extraordinary achievements transformed the way the game was played and inspired generations of cricketers.” Nottinghamshire described their former player as “cricket’s greatest-ever all-rounder” and an iconic figure in the club’s history. International Cricket Council chairman Jay Shah said the sport had lost “one of its icons”. “Sir Garfield Sobers was not only the finest all-rounder the game has ever known, but one of the greatest cricketers in history,” he said in a statement. “His remarkable ability to influence a match in every facet of the game set him apart from his peers.” England Cricket posted on X: “One of the greatest to ever play the game. Forever in our hearts, Sir Garfield Sobers.” Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott described Sobers as “like a panther with a purposeful, loping and confident walk”. “I just loved the way Garry walked out to bat,” he wrote in the Telegraph. “He didn’t say anything. He did not need to. There was no ego. His walk let the opposition know he was there for business.”

Kaizer Chiefs transfer report: Lilepo, Silva, Mayo, R8 million profit
Today’s Kaizer Chiefs transfer news revolves around Glody Lilepo and a massive potential profit that could accrue to the club. Kaizer Chiefs to sell Lilepo Chiefs spent €500 000 (approx. R9,3 million) to bring Glody Lilepo to Kaizer Chiefs from French third-tier side Valenciennes in January 2025. Roughly 18 months later, the club looks set to sell the 28-year-old for almost double that amount. Moroccan giants AS FAR are keen to sign the Congolese star. He has become one of the club’s most reliable operators, so a sale would be somewhat of a surprise. He bagged five goals and four assists in 27 league outings last term in a mostly wide attacking role. With news that Khanyisa Mayo is likely to sign permanently after his loan spell, it’s not out of the question that Lilepo could leave Naturena after arriving from Valenciennes in January 2025. Will his sale make the club’s reliance on Flavio Silva even more exaggerated? Mako breaks his arm Left-back Paseka Mako will miss the start of the new season after fracturing his arm during a pre-season friendly match in Spain. Chiefs confirm several departures Happy Mashiane, George Matlou, Aden McCarthy, Gaston Sirino and Tashreeq Morris are all no longer on the playing staff at Kaizer Chiefs. Mashiane and Matlou have battled injury issues, and 22-year-old Aden McCarthy has moved to Azerbaijan, while Sirino and Morris, both the ‘wrong’ side of 32, are deemed surplus to requirements. Goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner and defender Thabo Moloisane have arrived to start their work at the club. It’s believed that the club will also turn Khanyisa Mayo’s loan move into a permanent one.

Done deal loading: Kaizer Chiefs selling African star
Kaizer Chiefs are edging closer to the departure of Glody Makabi Lilepo, with the winger reportedly on the verge of joining Al Ahly Benghazi. The DR Congo international appears set to leave Naturena after just 18 months at the club. Lilepo joined Amakhosi from French side Valenciennes FC in January 2025. He went on to make more than 40 appearances. He established himself as one of the club’s most influential attacking players across the last two Betway Premiership campaigns. LATE ON KAIZER CHIEFS AND GLODY LILEPO According to Mthokozisi Dube of FARPost, Kaizer Chiefs are now in the final stages of completing the transfer. Dube reported: “Kaizer Chiefs are in the final stages of concluding Glody Makabi Lilepo’s transfer to Libyan giants Al Ahly Benghazi, with all parties understood to be aligned on the move.” The report suggests there are only a few details left before the deal is completed. “FARPost has established that the clubs are putting the final touches on the agreement, while personal terms between the DR Congo forward and Al Ahly Benghazi have already been settled,” Dube added. SUCCESSFUL SPELL AT NATURENA Lilepo made an immediate impact after arriving from Valenciennes FC on a two-and-a-half-year contract. The winger scored six league goals and registered one assist in just 15 Betway Premiership appearances during the second half of the 2024/25 campaign. He finished as Kaizer Chiefs’ leading league scorer despite joining midway through the season. The Congolese attacker remained a key figure during the 2025/26 season. He made 27 domestic appearances, scored five league goals and contributed four assists. He also earned a nomination for the Betway Premiership Goal of the Season award. Lilepo also delivered in continental football. He scored a crucial goal against AS Simba SC to help Kaizer Chiefs secure a 3-1 aggregate victory in the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round. If the move is completed, Kaizer Chiefs are expected to make a healthy profit. Nicknamed “Lollipop” by supporters, Lilepo leaves having played an important role in the club’s attack.
