Norris grabs first race win of season in Hungary
Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday ahead of Max Verstappen, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli recovered from a pre-race penalty to complete the podium in third. Starting from pole position, Norris lost the lead to McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri on the opening lap but fought his way back to the front to secure his first race victory of the season. McLaren’s hopes of a one-two finish were dashed with 15 laps remaining when Piastri retired with a gearbox problem while running second behind Norris. Norris, the reigning world champion, won at the Hungaroring for the second successive year as he became the fifth different race winner in the last five grands prix. Norris triumphed in the sprint race in Miami in May but had not taken the chequered flag at a grand prix since Sao Paulo last November. Verstappen matched his best result of the season despite a difficult weekend for Red Bull. Antonelli increased his lead at the top of the standings to 50 points over Lewis Hamilton after moving up from seventh on the starting grid, having incurred a three-place penalty on Saturday in qualifying. Hamilton slid from fourth to fifth in the race after receiving a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, dropping him behind Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc. The season now heads into its summer break before resuming with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on August 23.

Vilakazi nets winner as Da Cruz bags first trophy as Chiefs coach
Kaizer Chiefs edged Scottland FC of Zimbabwe 1-0 to win the annual Toyota Cup at a packed Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday.Mfundo Vilakazi scored the only goal of the match in the first half.New coach Fernando da Cruz gave a start to new signing Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, while other new recruits goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner and defender Thabo Moloisane started on the bench. As for the visitors, coach Norman Mapeza named former Amakhosi duo Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona in his starting line-up.It was an entertaining first half with both teams showing good intensity but Chiefs created the better chances. although Amakhosi are still missing that clinical edge in the final third. It didn’t come as a surprise though when Vilakazi gave Chiefs the lead when he pounced on a loose ball in the box before calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper, much to the delight of the fans who packed the stadium.“Obrigado”, as Vilakazi is commonly known in football circles, was one of the standout performers in the first half, constantly causing problems with his pace, but Chiefs lacked the killer instinct in front of goal.Scottland slowly found the rhythm as the game progressed and were able to create some half chances of their own, but none of them was able to trouble Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.Chiefs were dealt a blow just before the half-time break when defender Bradley Cross, who was playing at centre back alongside Inacio Miguel, picked up a knock and was replaced by Given Msimango.Chiefs led 1-0 at the break.Chiefs continued to control the game in the second half, but, unlike the first half, both teams failed to create any meaningful chances in the second stanza. The first chance of the half fell to Scottland in the 57th minute when Musona broke through on the right and delivered a perfect cross, but Petersen was alert to the danger and came out of his area to collect the ball.Itiosa Ighodaro came close to doubling Chiefs’ lead with a header in the 72nd minute, but the ball went narrowly over the crossbar. The visitors were awarded a free kick in a good area to grab a late equaliser in referee’s optional time, but Musona sent his shot over the crossbar.

Charlize Theron’s ‘The Odyssey’ role has South Africans heading to Ster-Kinekor
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has delivered a major boost to South Africa’s cinema industry, helping Ster-Kinekor record its strongest IMAX opening weekend in more than six years. The epic adaptation packed cinemas across the country, with several IMAX screenings selling out as moviegoers flocked to experience the film on the biggest screens available. Biggest IMAX opening since before the pandemic According to Ster-Kinekor, The Odyssey has become its best-performing IMAX opening weekend since 2019, marking one of the cinema chain’s strongest premium-format launches ever. “For Ster-Kinekor, this is the biggest IMAX opening weekend since 2019. The Odyssey opening weekend officially ranks as one of the best-performing IMAX titles on opening weekend in Ster-Kinekor’s history,” said Lynne Wylie, Chief Marketing Officer at Ster-Kinekor Theatres. The film’s stacked cast, which includes South Africa’s Charlize Theron, was always certain to draw huge numbers to cinemas, including: Matt Damon as Odysseus Tom Holland as Telemachus Anne Hathaway as Penelope Robert Pattinson as Antinous Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy Zendaya as Athena Charlize Theron as Calypso Elliot Page as Sinon Jon Bernthal as Menelaus The last films to generate similar IMAX demand were blockbuster releases including: Avengers: Infinity War (2018) Avengers: Endgame (2019) The Lion King (2019) Global box office success The South African success reflects the film’s strong international performance. According to Exhibitor Relations, The Odyssey grossed $263.5 million worldwide during its opening weekend, surpassing its reported $250 million production budget in just three days. The impressive debut has cemented the latest Christopher Nolan film as one of the biggest box office successes of the year. Streaming competition fails to slow cinemas The strong turnout also provides another positive sign for traditional cinemas, which have faced growing competition from streaming services in recent years. Nolan has long argued that his films are designed for the theatrical experience, particularly IMAX, where audiences can fully appreciate the large-scale visuals, immersive sound and cinematic spectacle. South African audiences appear to agree, with social media filled with praise for the film’s breathtaking cinematography, epic battle scenes and IMAX presentation. Many viewers have encouraged others to catch the film on the biggest screen possible before its premium-format run ends. More blockbusters on the way Ster-Kinekor believes the momentum will continue through the remainder of the year, with several major releases still to come. Upcoming blockbuster releases include: Spider-Man: Brand New Day – 31 July Street Fighter – 16 October The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping – 20 November Dune: Chapter 3 – 18 December Avengers: Doomsday – 18 December Jumanji: Open World – 25 December South African audiences can also look forward to Children of Blood and Bone, starring South African actress Thuso Mbedu, which is set for an IMAX release on 15 January 2027. Filmed entirely in South Africa, the fantasy epic features an international cast including Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Cynthia Erivo. With The Odyssey filling cinemas and attracting audiences back to the big screen, the latest box office figures suggest there is still strong demand for blockbuster films that deliver a truly immersive theatrical experience. ‘Unnecessary’: Gayton criticised over Jayden Adams’ funeral speech
Gayton McKenzie has been criticised over his “unnecessary” and “irrelevant” speech at the funeral service of Jayden Adams on Saturday, 26 July in Stellenbosch. The Minister of Sport was invited to address the group of mourners, which included the late Bafana Bafana’s family and friends, soccer colleagues and SAFA and Sundowns management. Jayden is believed to have taken his own life earlier this month, just weeks after returning from the national team from the FIFA World Cup. GAYTON MCKENZIE SLAMMED OVER JAYDEN ADAMS SPEECH Gayto McKenzie was one of several prominent delegates who attended the funeral of Jayden Adams  Others included SAFA President Danny Jordaan, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, and the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Sundowns FC, Patrice Motsepe. Gayton kicked off his speech by sympathising with Jayden’s loved ones. He also used the opportunity to call out social media trolls who had blamed Jayden’s partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, for his shock death. Thereafter, the minister was accused of going off on a tangent, speaking on topics like Complimenting Patrice Motsepe’s wife, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, on her fashion sense and success. Commending Tlhopie Motsepe on being well-mannered and an astute businessman Recalling how he once took his girlfriend to a party hosted by his pal, Kenny Kunene Claiming that Bafana coach texted him that ‘I never used to like you’ Mocking Kaizer Chiefs for not winning a trophy for the last 2 decades Calling out football “hooligans” who “used their R5 data to insult our players” Unnecessary things @GaytonMcK said at Jayden Adams' funeral🤦🏾‍♂️: • "Kaizer Chiefs haven’t won a trophy in 10 years." • "When Kenny Kunene had his 28th birthday party, I had a new girlfriend." • "Yaya Sithole suffered abuse after we lost to Mexico. He suffered segregation,… pic.twitter.com/28tLib6UON— Commander!!! (@maetsebane) July 26, 2026 Here’s what social media users had to say about Gayton’s speech… @SocietyNews: “His entire speech was cringe” @SilenceEstelle: “He should have just said condolences to the family and sat down.  Less is more” @DesireTablai: “That’s the reason why politicians must never be given the platform at a funeral to deliver a eulogy. They start speaking nonsense instead of about the person who died and the family”. INSENSITIVE? Gayton McKenzie was also criticised by the public after the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture posted a video of the minister looking into the casket of Jayden Adams. In a statement a day earlier, the Adams family shared that only a select few would be permitted to view the body of the late player. The family also prohibited the public from taking pictures or videos of the funeral for posting on social media. This was not supposed to be posted— Mlambo 🇵🇸 (@this_user15) July 25, 2026
