Kubayi confirms no golden handshake for Johnson after resignation
Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac) head Advocate Andrea Johnson will not walk away with a golden handshake, though she will retain her pension. On Monday, 27 July 2026, President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted Johnson’s immediate resignation following her request to vacate office under the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Act. No golden handshake The president’s decision follows a recommendation by Kubayi, supported by National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Andy Mothibi, that Johnson’s request be granted. Kubayi said while Johnson will not get a package, she will retain her pension. “She will not get a golden handshake, but she will keep her pension. I cannot withhold any payment for what she has worked for. There is no legal basis – I would be violating the laws of the country,” she told 702 Idac cases Kubayi added that with Johnson’s departure, not all Idac cases will be reviewed. “Not all IDAC matters will be reviewed. Many of the cases are being handled with external support under Section 38 appointments, and we do not believe they will collapse,” Kubayi explained. Best interests Kubayi confirmed that Johnson’s resignation was handled in line with the NPA Act, stressing that the decision was made in the best interests of the NPA and its credibility. “We believed that indeed, in the best interests of the NPA and the integrity of the prosecution team, we needed to recommend acceptance of the request,” she said. The minister noted that Johnson herself acknowledged the institution was bigger than any individual. “The organisation must sustain beyond individuals. We should never allow one person to become the source of destruction of the institution,” Kubayi added. Speculation Addressing speculation about suspension, Kubayi was firm. “Let’s focus on the resignation now. Conversations between a minister and the president are protected by law in terms of confidentiality. What matters is that we considered the request and accepted it.” Kubayi confirmed that she and the NDPP will brief the nation later this week on plans to rebuild confidence in the NPA and ensure continuity in the fight against corruption. Request for resignation Johnson directed her request for an immediate release from office to the NDPP and Ramaphosa. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the president thanked Johnson for her service. “President Ramaphosa thanked Adv Johnson for her years of service in the NPA and as the head of IDAC. “The President assures the leadership and staff of the NPA of government’s unwavering support for its work in the fight against crime and corruption,” Magwenya said. Complaints Last week, the Office of the Idac Oversight Judge confirmed that it was handling formal complaints against Johnson, amid mounting public scrutiny and media pressure. The confirmation comes just days after the oversight office was formally established under retired Justice Takalani Raulinga, appointed to chair the newly created watchdog.

Inside Ayanda’s Bosa boot: Would you donate a month’s salary to your political party boss?
Former Build One South Africa (Bosa) Gauteng leader, Ayanda Allie, says she was expelled by her former party because of a dispute over money. Last week, Bosa confirmed that it had expelled Allie after a disciplinary process that began last year. “The Board of Build One South Africa (Bosa) has resolved to terminate the membership of Ms Ayanda Allie, Bosa’s Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, following the conclusion of an internal disciplinary process. “The issues giving rise to these proceedings have been under consideration for more than a year, since osa first indicated its intention to institute disciplinary proceedings in July 2025,” said Bosa board chairperson Stevens Mokgalapa. Allie responds Explaining her exit over the weekend, Allie alleged that the party initially wanted her to give away one month’s salary as a donation to the party once a year. “Tensions arose with party leadership when I declined to sign a Code of Conduct requiring me to donate an entire month’s salary to the party annually, plus an additional 10% of my gross salary monthly,” she said. According to Allie, the policy was revised to remove the full month’s contribution and adjust the monthly amount to 10% of her net salary. She said she accepted this arrangement. “However, further issues emerged when I was informed that legislative funds meant for travel and constituency work would not be made available for me to fulfil my constitutional obligations. “As a result, I withheld the party levy from Bosa and instead used the resources to support the legislative and party-political community initiatives for which I took an oath,” she alleged. The party has yet to respond to her claims. Constituency work and party levy During mediation efforts, Allie was allegedly told that funds for constituency work would be made available to her, but tensions now arose because she was told to back pay the party levy. “I agreed to commence paying the party levy. Bosa subsequently asked me to back pay two years of levies, and I, in exchange, requested reimbursement for expenses that I had covered personally during the same period. “We agreed to calculate and offset both amounts. No deadline was set, but while this process was underway, more misunderstandings arose over mayoral candidacies, ultimately leading to a disciplinary hearing,” said Allie. She said she had admitted to withholding the party levy at a hearing chaired by an independent person. “The chairperson ruled that my actions did not warrant dismissal, but the Bosa Board of Directors disagreed. “Rather than appeal the sanction by the Board, I accepted that the party founders no longer wished for me to continue and agreed with their assertion that our relationship had irreparably broken down. “Be that as it may, I am grateful to Bosa leaders Dr Mmusi Maimane and Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster, as well as every Bosa member and voter, for allowing me the privilege of serving,” she said.

Another strike threatens economic shutdown this WEEK
South Africa braces for another major strike action this week. First migrant labour protests, now Gauteng’s taxi industry is threatening an economic shutdown. The date in question is tomorrow, Tuesday 28 July 2026, with potential to extend at least seven days, if no middle ground is reached. So, be prepared. National Taxi Alliance (NTA) operators say they cannot renew or apply for operating licences due to a debilitating backlog within the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport. As such, many drivers and operators have been working without licences and are having their vehicles fined and/or impounded. NATIONAL TAXI ALLIANCE STRIKE Meanwhile, Gauteng’s MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, denies there are any backlogs. She insists the licence renewal system works exactly as designed. And it is illegal operators and so-called ‘ghost members’ who are pushing for the strike and shutdown action. As such, she points to discrepancies between association membership figures and departmental records. 542 members says the taxi alliance, while the department has 4 800 members on the books. Clearly, one side’s math doesn’t add up … Nevertheless, another strike threat and major economic shutdown is the last thing the country needs right now. One month ago, 30 June 2026 immigration protests brought parts of the country to a halt. Fearing the worst, many treated it like a public holiday with schools and businesses closed preemptively. ANOTHER BIG DENT IN THE ECONOMY A reminder of how nasty 2023’s taxi strike violence was in Cape Town when negotiations broke down. Image: File A taxi strike would land another blow. More than 75% of South Africans – from children to elderly SASSA grant recipients travelling at month end – rely only on minibus taxis to get around. Without them, businesses may close entirely, at least for the day. Gauteng NTA chair Mpho Motsepe wants a sit-down with the MEC. He wants industry grievances addressed. Failing that, the strike goes ahead for a minimum of seven days. Cape Town saw something similar play out back in 2023. SANTACO organised a strike over mass taxi impoundments. The city called in reinforcements and SANTACO got heavy-handed with retaliations. The Cape Chamber of Commerce counted the damage afterward in the tens of millions. Three quarters of businesses reported more than half their staff were affected. 69% reported direct financial losses and 32% lost over half their usual daily earnings. Gauteng’s economy could face a similar reckoning if this strike goes ahead tomorrow, Tuesday 28 July 2026. But what do you think? Should the NTA strike if it feels like Gauteng authorities are not up to scratch? Do you use public transport in the province? If so, what is the experience like? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below …
