RTMC warns motorists as icy snow and flooding hit EC and KZN
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to be extremely cautious while travelling through the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal amid wet, icy conditions and freezing temperatures. The South African Weather Service (Saws) issued orange level 5 warnings for disruptive snow and orange level 6 warnings for disruptive snow, with conditions potentially causing flooding of bridges, roads, and settlements, infrastructure damage, and icy road conditions. Orange level 5 and 6 warnings issued for disruptive snow and rain The weather conditions are forecast through the Eastern Cape highlights, the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal, and routes towards Lesotho. The Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) said rainfall was anticipated in specific areas within the Great Kei, Mbashe, Mnquma, King Sabatha Dalindyebo, Nyandeni, Port St Johns, and Winnie Madikizela Mandela municipalities. The disruptive snowfall is over the Walter Sisulu, Enoch Mgijima, Emalahleni, Sakhisizwe, and Umzimvubu local municipalities. “We advise all individuals to implement necessary precautions and to monitor regular weather updates disseminated through radio and social media channels,” Eastern Cape Cogta said. The KwaZulu-Natal Cogta said disruptive rain will affect Big Five Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Mtubatuba, Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, uMhlathuze, uMlalazi and Umzumbe. Conditions create hazardous driving – RTMC “Heavy and persistent rainfall is expected across parts of KwaZulu-Natal, with the potential to cause widespread flooding of roads, bridges and settlements, damage to infrastructure and mud-based homes, disruption to essential services, and dangerous conditions near rivers and streams,” KZN Cogta said. RTMC said the conditions are expected to create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on mountain passes, high-altitude routes and major transport corridors. “Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and to remain alert for possible road closures, reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces,” the corporation said. RTMC appealed to all motorists to observe the following road safety measures: Reduce speed and drive according to the prevailing weather and road conditions. Increase the following distance between vehicles to allow sufficient stopping time. Avoid sudden braking, harsh acceleration and sharp steering manoeuvres on icy or snow-covered roads. Switch on headlights to improve visibility, even during daylight hours. Ensure vehicles are roadworthy, with tyres, brakes, lights and windscreen wipers in good working condition. Carry essential emergency supplies, including warm clothing, blankets, drinking water, non-perishable food, a fully charged cellphone and a torch. Check weather forecasts and official traffic updates before embarking on a journey. Comply with the instructions of traffic law enforcement officers and emergency personnel at all times. Warnings “The RTMC warns motorists not to drive around road closure barriers or attempt to cross roads covered by snow or ice,” the corporation said. “Such actions place motorists, passengers and emergency responders at unnecessary risk and may delay rescue and recovery operations.” In situations where severe weather may affect operations, freight and public transport operators are also urged to closely monitor the weather and re-evaluate their travel schedules. “The RTMC, working together with provincial and local traffic authorities, law enforcement agencies and emergency services, will continue to monitor the situation and provide timely updates on road conditions and traffic management interventions,” RTMC said.

Elam Ndakisa earns White Blazer at The Wykeham Collegiate! [photos]
The third term is going well for Elam Ndakisa, a dedicated learner at The Wykeham Collegiate. She celebrated being awarded the coveted White Blazer at the prestigious girls’ school in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. ELAM NDAKISA CELEBRATES WHITE BLAZER ACHIEVEMENT During the assembly, Elam’s teachers, schoolmates, and family all shared their pride in her latest accomplishment. The school announced on social media that Elam was awarded the White Blazer, the highest honour reflecting a learner’s excellence across academic fields. “This morning’s assembly was one we will remember for years to come as we had the immense privilege of awarding Elam Ndakisa a White Blazer – the highest award The Wykeham Collegiate can bestow on a pupil.” “A White Blazer recognises a combination of achievements across multiple areas of school life.” The school also mentioned that to qualify for this distinguished honour, a learner must “earn Honours in at least two areas of school life (the areas are defined as Academic, Cultural and Sport), Full Colours in a third, maintain an exemplary disciplinary record, and consistently uphold the values of The Wykeham Collegiate.” Elam performed brilliantly in various categories, such as scoring an average above 85% in Academic Honours and receiving Full Colours for Hockey, “including KZN inland U18 C representation.” She also received Honours for both Drama and the Senior Choir, including the Gospel Choir. LEADING WITH HUMILITY Elam’s academic excellence isn’t the only impressive aspect; her character is equally inspiring. The school described her as someone who genuinely cares for and supports others, leading with humility as Head of School.  “While these accomplishments are remarkable, those who know Elam will tell you that her greatest strength is who she is. As Head of School, she has led with humility and genuine care and support for others.” “She has encouraged those around her, embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, and served our community with kindness, integrity, and grace.” CONGRATULATORY MESSAGES ROLLED IN Sandra Hassard Trethewey wrote: I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of this honour. Elam, keep shining, beautiful! You are perfectly and wonderfully made, the daughter of a King!!! Congratulations. Mandi Botha commented: Congratulations, Elam! Your White Blazer is a testament not only to your achievements but to the way you lead with humility and grace. You set a shining example for our children and the entire TWC community. Well done! Carolyn Hooey added: Congratulations, I still get shivers thinking about the song you sang for us at old girls’ lunch.

Kaizer Chiefs legend gets new job in Zimbabwe
The former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder will join the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League club as assistant coach. He will work alongside fellow South African Thabo Senong, who has been appointed as the club’s new head coach. RENEILWE LETSHOLONYANE STARTS NEW CHAPTER Letsholonyane travelled to Zvishavane on Tuesday to finalise his contract. The South African duo replaces Joel Luphahla, who recently left the club following a poor run of results. FC Platinum currently sit 10th in the league after 25 matches. The club hopes Senong and Letsholonyane can revive their campaign during the final nine games of the season. The pair are still awaiting work permits and final administrative clearance. Until then, Alex Sigion and Moses Mwafulirwa will continue overseeing first-team training. FC PLATINUM APPOINT EXPERIENCED DUO The move comes after Letsholonyane left Botswana Premier League side Matebele FC. In his first season as head coach, he guided the club to a 10th-place finish and secured their top-flight status. As a player, Letsholonyane enjoyed one of the most successful careers in South African football. He made more than 200 appearances for Kaizer Chiefs and won two league titles along with several domestic trophies. The midfielder also played for Jomo Cosmos, SuperSport United, Highlands Park and TS Galaxy. He earned 54 caps for Bafana Bafana and represented South Africa at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. After retiring in 2021, Letsholonyane began his coaching career at the Kaizer Chiefs academy. He later worked with the AmaZulu reserve team and served as an assistant coach for South Africa’s Under-20 and CHAN national teams before taking charge of Matebele FC.
