Teen among those arrested for robbery at Eastern Cape primary school
A total of six suspects aged between 16 and 25 years old were arrested after allegedly robbing a local primary school in Kwazakhele, Eastern Cape. Reports from the South African Police Service (Saps) state that on Tuesday, three armed suspects entered the principal’s office at a primary school in Tubali Street, Kwazakhele. Principal locked in office The incident reportedly occurred around 9am, where the suspects threatened the principal with firearms before robbing him of a laptop, tablet, cellphone, and vehicle keys. Saps reports allege that the principal was then locked inside his office. The suspects then moved through the school premises, entering the staff kitchen and classrooms where they robbed staff members of additional laptops, cell phones, and vehicle keys before fleeing the scene on foot. Fled on foot Following the incident, members of the Kwazekhele Social Crime Prevention Unit responded by conducting patrols in the surrounding area based on the information received. Three males matching the suspects’ descriptions were spotted. One of the suspects dropped a grey backpack before the group left on foot, upon noticing the police vehicle. Recovered stolen property Members successfully apprehended one juvenile suspect after a chase ensued. Inside the backpack, police recovered two laptops, a tablet and laptop chargers. The recovered property was positively identified by the school principal as items stolen during the robbery. Court Proceedings Further investigations and operations were conducted on Wednesday, which led police to additional suspects believed to have been involved in the robbery. Police are still investigating the possibility of linking the suspects to other crimes committed in the Motherwell area and surrounding policing precincts. The suspects are expected to appear at the New Brighton Magistrates Court on Friday, on charges of business robbery. The investigation is still underway, and additional charges may be added as more information becomes available.

Broos pens emotional farewell to Bafana
Hugo Broos has written an emotional goodbye to Bafana Bafana, with the South African Football Association (SAFA) set to announce his departure on Friday, according to farpost.co.za. SAFA to announce Broos Bafana exit? Broos’ contract as Bafana head coach is set to expire on Friday, and SAFA have called a press conference for 12pm. There was some speculation that Broos could sign an extension to his deal, or join SAFA in another capacity, but it seems that they time has come to say goodbye. “Dear guys, with pain in my heart, I will not extend my contract as coach of Bafana Bafana,” wrote Broos, according to Far Post. My long absence from my family and the many lonely moments in South Africa have led me to make this difficult decision. We started five years ago a near-mission impossible. “Through hard work, discipline, mentality and quality, our results kept getting better with a historical second round on WC 2026 a month ago. “I want to thank you for believing in me as a coach, for the fantastic atmosphere you created in the team. Our relationship was more than a coach-player relationship; I will never forget you. Thank you for everything. Coach Hugo.” A fine five years Broos took over as Bafana head coach in May 2021, and in his five years in charge did superbly to revive the fortunes of the senior international team. The Belgian led them to third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast. He then led Bafana through qualifying for a Fifa World Cup finals for the first time since Carlos Queiroz qualified South Africa for the 2002 Fifa World Cup finals. At the 2026 Fifa World Cup finals, Bafana qualified for the knockout stages of a World Cup finals for the first time, ultimately getting knocked out in the last 32 by Canada.

Daily Snow Report: Mountain regions remain under close watch
South Africa’s mountain regions are enjoying a much-needed break from severe winter weather, with no fresh snowfall forecast for Friday, 31 July after a week of disruptive rain, snow and strong winds. The latest forecast from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) shows a far calmer picture across the country, with the cut-off low pressure system responsible for this week’s Orange Level 5 and Orange Level 6 warnings having moved away. Only one weather warning remains As of Friday, the only active weather warning nationwide is a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds and waves between KwaDukuza and Kosi Bay along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. An extremely high fire danger warning has also been issued for the Matzikama Municipality in the Western Cape. Elsewhere, conditions are expected to remain mostly fine and cool. Gauteng will see a partly cloudy morning in the north before clearing, with cool temperatures and morning frost in places. The Free State and Western Cape are forecast to be fine to partly cloudy, with patches of morning fog over the north-eastern parts of the Western Cape. KwaZulu-Natal will remain cool to cold, with isolated showers along the coast and adjacent interior, while fresh south-westerly winds continue along parts of the coastline. Mountain regions remain under watch Although no fresh snow is expected today, South Africa’s highest peaks remain under close observation as winter enters its final stretch. The Maloti-Drakensberg range and Lesotho’s Afriski Mountain Resort continue to be the country’s most likely areas for snowfall whenever the next cold front approaches. This week’s snow event, which prompted high-level SAWS warnings across parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, served as another reminder of how quickly conditions can deteriorate in the country’s mountain regions. Motorists planning to travel through the Drakensberg or across high-altitude mountain passes this weekend are encouraged to monitor local weather forecasts and road conditions before setting off, even though conditions have improved significantly. For now, however, South Africa’s mountain regions appear set for a quieter end to the week as forecasters keep a close eye on the next potential winter weather system. Is it snowing in your area? If so, please send your photos to info@thesouthafrican.com

Madlanga Commission: A week that shook IDAC
Former Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnson dominated another week at the Madlanga Commission. She resigned. She returned to the witness stand. She then faced fresh allegations from one of her own prosecutors. The commission continued probing allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system. Johnson resigns Johnson resigned as head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) on 26 July. President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted her resignation with immediate effect the following day. Johnson returned to the witness stand on 28 July. Although she no longer led the directorate, she remained under subpoena. Evidence leaders continued questioning Johnson about IDAC’s investigation into senior Crime Intelligence officials. They asked whether the directorate acted within its legal mandate and whether investigators followed proper processes. The commission also examined why IDAC pursued some allegations while others allegedly never reached Johnson’s desk. Johnson told the inquiry she had not been briefed on those matters. She defended the directorate’s handling of the investigation and denied any wrongdoing. Commissioners compared her evidence with documents and testimony from previous witnesses as the inquiry continued. Ramsamy challenges Johnson The inquiry then heard from IDAC prosecutor Drushantha Ramsamy, who worked on the Crime Intelligence case alongside the directorate’s leadership. Ramsamy became the first serving IDAC prosecutor to give first-hand evidence about how the case against Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo and Brigadier Dineo Mokwele was built. She disputed parts of Johnson’s testimony and challenged her account of key decisions taken during the investigation. Ramsamy alleged Johnson personally drove an investigation known as Project Diversion, which targeted National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and Khumalo. She also claimed Johnson handed her a list of suspects after discussions with senior investigators. Johnson has previously denied wrongdoing. Secret recording played Ramsamy said she secretly recorded the conversation. The commission played the recording during Thursday’s proceedings. According to Ramsamy, Johnson told her: “If the Madlanga Commission calls you, you must leave the country.” The recording formed part of Ramsamy’s evidence as she challenged Johnson’s version of events. Commissioners will now assess the competing accounts alongside documentary evidence and testimony already before the inquiry before making findings. What’s next? The commission will continue hearing evidence as it investigates allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system. President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the commission’s reporting deadline to 16 November 2026.
