Chaine: Mindset will decide Pirates’ season
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine says the Buccaneers will need a ‘different mindset’ if they are to repeat last season’s success of winning a treble. The Buccaneers claimed a treble last season, which comprised the MTN8, Carling Knockout and the Betway Premiership. However, unlike last season where they were chasing Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title, Pirates found themselves in unfamiliar territory this time around. As they kick off their league title defence with a clash against Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday at 3pm, the Buccaneers transition from the hunter to the hunted.“Yes, a different mindset, different season. What worked in 2025/26 won’t work in 2026/27. More from ourselves, more from everyone that is connected to Orlando Pirates,” Chaine told reporters during a media conference at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg earlier this week. “That is the important thing, a different mindset, a mindset of achieving even greater things. A mindset that now we are the chased and we are not chasing. It requires a different, overall, perspective of what you are coming up with.” On overcoming the pressure of being the targeted team this season, Chaine said: “It depends how you look at it. From your perspective, it might be the same or not but, with us, winning the league championship is not just about the trophy.”We have goals, we have aspirations within the season and when you walk towards that, that’s the most important thing, because in setting the bar there, it gives you the league championship rather than the league being the ultimate goal.”

Ayanda Allie goes green: Former Bosa member joins Mashaba’s ActionSA
ActionSA has confirmed the political signing of an established face in South Africa’s current affairs sphere. Build One South Africa’s loss was Herman Mashaba’s gain as he announced that Ayanda Allie would join his party less than 100 days before the 2026 local government elections. Allie left Bosa last week following the outcome of a disciplinary process allegedly involving party fees. A triumphant Allie beamed as she expressed her gratitude for the fresh start. “I don’t want to dwell on the past, colleagues. I don’t want to resuscitate the events preceding today. I don’t want to mar this glorious occasion by regurgitating what has already been ventilated well enough. “I do, however, want to place on record my thanks to the previous organisation of which I was part, for the experience they had given me and also the opportunity to serve. “It matters not how I found myself in this room today. What matters is that I am here, in full force, completely, totally and wholeheartedly souled out to the mission of ActionSA,” Allie said. This is a developing story

Kaizer Chiefs report update: Faiz ‘Fire’ Abrahams
The interest comes after Kaizer Chiefs agreed a deal to sign Langelihle Phili from the Betway Premiership side. According to Mthokozisi Dube of FARPost, Amakhosi are pushing to sign the 21-year-old winger. The report also claims a swap deal involving DDC defender Gopolang Taunyana is being explored. FAIZ ABRAHAMS ATTRACTS AMAKHOSI INTEREST Abrahams, affectionately known as Fire, has reportedly turned down an approach from Durban City. The winger is now believed to be waiting on Kaizer Chiefs as they work on a deal. The Bishop Lavis-born attacker began his career in the youth ranks at Cape Town Spurs, formerly known as Ajax Cape Town. After the club’s relegation, Abrahams decided against renewing his contract. He instead joined Stellenbosch FC. The winger enjoyed an outstanding season in the club’s DStv Diski Challenge team. He scored 11 goals and won the DDC Player of the Season award. KAIZER CHIEFS CHASE ATTACKING TALENT His impressive form earned him a senior debut against Amakhosi during the closing stages of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season. Stellenbosch FC later sent him on loan to Israeli club Hapoel Kfar Saba for the 2025/26 campaign. The young attacker impressed with three goals and three assists in 11 appearances before returning to South Africa ahead of schedule. His pace, direct running and attacking quality have made him one of the country’s brightest young talents. If Kaizer Chiefs complete the move, Abrahams would become their second signing from Stellenbosch FC during the current transfer window.

Cape Town owner banned after shocking SPCA puppy case
A Cape Town woman has been barred from owning animals for five years after pleading guilty to animal cruelty in a case involving a young puppy that suffered severe neglect before being euthanised. The sentence was handed down in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 29 July. Puppy found with elastic band embedded in neck According to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, an inspector responded to a complaint at a Wesbank property on 16 October 2024. The inspector found Cleo, a black crossbreed puppy estimated to be four to five months old, hiding in bushes. She had a deep wound around her neck, was severely underweight and emitted a strong foul odour. The owner told the inspector she had tried treating the puppy herself before surrendering Cleo to the SPCA after being advised that urgent veterinary treatment was needed. A veterinary examination revealed the extent of the injuries. An elastic band had become deeply embedded in Cleo’s neck, cutting almost to her trachea as it gradually tightened over time. The wound had become chronically infected and tissue had started growing over the band. Veterinarians estimated the injury had been left untreated for at least a month. Cleo was also moderately emaciated, anaemic and suffering from tick and flea infestations. Due to the severity of her condition and poor prognosis, veterinarians recommended humane euthanasia to prevent further suffering. Court hands down suspended sentence The SPCA said 60-year-old Christina Bernardus pleaded guilty to one count under the Animals Protection Act. The court sentenced her to a R10 000 fine or four months’ imprisonment. The sentence was wholly suspended for five years. In addition, Bernardus was declared unfit to own or possess any animal for five years. The SPCA described the ownership ban as one of the most significant outcomes of the case, saying it would help prevent further suffering by animals in her care. SPCA says cruelty has consequences The organisation said its inspectors continue investigating animal cruelty cases and work alongside legal teams to secure successful prosecutions. “Every successful prosecution sends a clear message: cruelty to animals has consequences,” the SPCA said. The organisation also thanked Control Prosecutor Janell Cochrane at the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court for her role in prosecuting animal cruelty matters. It further acknowledged the complainant whose report led inspectors to Cleo, saying public reporting remains vital in protecting vulnerable animals. How to report animal cruelty The Cape of Good Hope SPCA urged members of the public to report suspected cases of animal cruelty, neglect or abuse as soon as possible. Reports can be made through the organisation’s 24-hour cruelty line, WhatsApp service or online reporting platform. The SPCA said all complaints are treated confidentially.
