Broos explains why he has to say goodbye to Bafana
Hugo Broos says being away from his family is the only reason that he has taken the decision to step down as Bafana Bafana head coach. Bafana’s Broos – ‘That means I did a great job’ Broos announced on Friday that he would not be continuing as Bafana head coach, opting not to extend a five-year contract that expired at the end of this month. “I am the only (Bafana) coach in the last 32 years who has stayed to the end of his contract,” Broos told reporters at SAFA house. “That means I did a great job, otherwise you couldn’t stay five years with the same team and the same organisation (SAFA). There would be trouble and fights. “It means I am extremely proud to have achieved this. “The past days were very sad for me. The lonely moments and long periods away from my family were very difficult for me. That is the only reason why I am leaving Bafana.” Under Broos, Bafana finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and made it through qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup finals. At the World Cup, a victory over South Korea made them the first Bafana side to make it to the knockout rounds at a Fifa World Cup finals. Bafana ultimately exited the competition in the last 32 at the hands of hosts Canada. ‘Fantastic people’ “I leave fantastic people who I worked with for five years,” added Broos. “I have had extremely large respect and gratitude, not only from the people I worked with, but from nearly the whole of South Africa.” “It is amazing when I leave my apartment to go and get groceries, five, ten 15 and sometimes 20 people stop me. They say ‘coach take a photo and thank you, you made us proud. That has never happened in my 30 year career as a coach.”

‘Shoprite vouchers will be better’: The SASSA Children’s Grant idea receipts want
The South African and toiletries, instead of ongoing cash support, sparked a fresh round of debate among readers. While the original proposal focused on birth essentials, several commenters redirected the conversation toward retail vouchers as a more practical alternative. Reader Caryn Jade Crouster suggested that store-specific vouchers would work better than a once-off box. “I think maybe Shoprite or PNP vouchers will be better, and it must only be allowed to be used in the grocery store,” she wrote. Vouchers with conditions, not blank cheques Adriana Snyman echoed the voucher idea but added a condition of her own, proposing restrictions on what could be bought. “I think food vouchers with a limit what can be bought… no sweets ect,” she commented. Angelique Martin took the argument further, pointing out that a care box aimed at newborns overlooks older children entirely. “Not everyone who receives child grant has newborns… Give food vouchers instead… Checkers Shoprite,” she wrote, naming specific retailers she believes should be included in any voucher system. A practical compromise, or another logistical headache? Together, these responses suggest many readers see vouchers, not a birth box, as the fairer middle ground between cash grants and in-kind support. The appeal is straightforward: vouchers can be used monthly, for ongoing needs, rather than a single payout tied only to a baby’s early weeks. But the idea raises the same questions as the original care box proposal. Retail vouchers would still require SASSA to negotiate with specific stores, enforce spending restrictions, and manage a system very different from its current Postbank card payments. For now, it remains one more idea in a growing list of alternatives South Africans is proposing as frustration with the current grant system continues to build. Win R2 000 in the South African SASSA grant survey If you receive a SASSA grant and want to share your story, we want to hear from you. Take part in our survey and stand a chance to win R2 000.
