‘Increase the grant amount’: Gauteng pensioner’s message to SASSA
Gabriel supports up to five dependants on the Older Persons Grant, and by the third week of every month, the money is gone. He receives R2 400 a month through the Older Persons Grant. He shares a family home with relatives who pool their earnings to keep everyone fed. Even with that combined support, the grant doesn’t stretch far enough. Rising food prices are eating into what little buying power he has left, and he says he regularly goes without. Despite holding a diploma in admin and office work, Tsotetsi is still job hunting, and says he’s willing to relocate for the right opportunity. But South Africa’s unemployment rate sits above 32%, and older jobseekers often battle age discrimination on top of scarce openings. For now, the grant remains his only steady income, and it isn’t covering the basics. Long queues, little information Gabriel rates his overall SASSA experience as very good. His payments land directly in his bank account each month, sparing him the trip to a collection point, and he says the application process itself was simple. But dealing with SASSA outside of payment day is a different story. Long queues at SASSA offices, difficulty tracking his application status, and a shortage of clear information online remain constant frustrations. He also had no idea other support programmes existed that might have helped fill the gap. What Gabriel wants to see change Asked what one change would make the biggest difference, Gabriel didn’t hesitate: increase the grant amount. He wants SASSA to increase the Older Persons Grant and make it easier for pensioners to receive their payments through the banks they prefer. It’s a request rooted in the daily maths of stretching too little money across too many needs, an experience shared by countless South African pensioners on fixed incomes. Win R2 000 in the South African SASSA grant survey If you receive a SASSA grant and want to share your story, we want to hear from you. Take part in our survey and stand a chance to win R2 000. Prince Kaybee defends All Blacks support: ‘Freedom of choice’
Prince Kaybee – real name Kabelo Motsamai – has defended his decision to support the All Blacks over the Springboks. The music DJ is among a group of South Africans, known as the “Cape Crusaders”, who have pledged their allegiance to the New Zealand rugby club. The team is currently in South Africa ahead of a series of matches against provincial clubs. In the coming weeks, they will also play the Springboks in three test matches. PRINCE KAYBEE: ‘ALL BLACKS FOREVER’ On his X account, Prince Kaybee shared his joy at the All Blacks’ arrival in Cape Town on Friday, 31 July. As he has done before, the DJ and producer also defended his decision to support the Kiwi club over South Africa’s Springboks. He shared: “To support the All Blacks is not just some fascination with trends. It is a respect, an honour. New Zealand stood in solidarity with BLACK PEOPLE when the white South African rugby team did not want people who look like Siya Kholisi to participate in the sport. He continued: “To support New Zealand as a South African is beyond sport, it’s beyond lifting the World Cup, it’s more a shared struggle of humanity, they didn’t have to do that, but they did. All Blacks forever” Responding to one critic who claimed that AB supporters should relinquish their support, Prince Kaybee responded: “It’s no longer democracy if people cannot practice freedom of expression. It’s also a complicated issue, a black captain isn’t going to miraculously solve everything”. To support the All Blacks is not just some fascination with trends. It is respect an honour. New Zealand stood in solidarity with BLACK PEOPLE when the white South African rugby did not want people that look like Siya Kholisi to participate in the sport. To support New Zealand… PRINCE KAYBEE (@KabeloMusic) August 1, 2026 RASSIE: ‘LET THEM SUPPORT WHO THEY WANT’ In 2024, coach Rassie Erasmus defended South Africans who chose to support the All Blacks over the Springboks. Speaking in a video clip, he said: “Obviously, there are historical reasons, bitterness, and heartache that has contributed [to it]. That we must take, understand, and mind”. He added, “Don’t be upset with those people if that’s what they feel they want to give back. Because there were times when they got support [from New Zealand]”.
