Fake Justice Tembeka Ngcukaitobi WhatsApp scam sparks fresh alarm in judiciary
The Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) has raised concerns after an individual impersonated Acting Constitutional Court Justice Tembeka Ngcukaitobi. This comes a week after a brazen impersonation scam targeted one of South Africa’s senior judges; Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA), Justice Dumisani Zondi, issued an urgent public warning. Impersonation The OCJ said it has noted an individual impersonating Justice Ngcukaitobi. “According to the information available to the OCJ, the individual/s sent WhatsApp messages purporting to be from Acting Justice Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, using a profile picture of his likeness. “The mobile number from which the message came is 079 139 2620 and is registered on WhatsApp as belonging to ‘Justice T Ngcukaitobi,'” the OCJ said. Warning The OCJ warned the public not to fall prey to this impersonator and to be aware that misrepresenting a state of affairs, knowing it is not true, to someone else’s prejudice is fraud. “The matter will be reported to the relevant authorities for further handling. “Members of the public and media are requested to contact the OCJ to verify the authenticity of any communication, directive, article, or social media post that purports to be that of a Judge,” the OCJ said. Mandisa Maya In June 2025, the OCJ warned the public about fake social media accounts impersonating Chief Justice Mandisa Maya, stressing that she does not have personal or official accounts on platforms such as Facebook, X or TikTok. The office said impersonating a judicial officer is a criminal offence and urged South Africans not to engage with accounts claiming to belong to Maya. The public were encouraged to verify any suspicious communication through the Chief Justice’s office. The warning followed a previous impersonation incident in which a WhatsApp account falsely claimed to belong to Maya. The matter was reported to the police

Madlanga Commission to quiz Serge Cabonge over Sibiya recordings
The Madlanga Commission says it will engage with Controversial businessman Serge Cabonge and obtain a statement from him after voice recordings claimed that former deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya had met several women through him. The voice recordings attributed to Cabonge were raised during Sibiya’s bail hearing in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. Madlanga Commission “Mr Cabonge has previously been mentioned at hearings before the Commission. The Commission will engage with Mr Cabonge and obtain his statement as part of its broad investigation into matters falling within its terms of reference and his mention of the Commission in the recording,” said Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels “The Commission will not comment further on this matter at this stage.” Recording The claim emerged when the Randburg Magistrate’s Court heard a 25-minute recording of a telephone conversation between Cabonge and Sibiya’s alleged former bodyguard and driver, known as Mr M. During the call, Cabonge mentioned Tebogo Thobejane, the former girlfriend of tenderpreneur Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, and suggested Sibiya may have met her several times. Girls When Mr M said Sibiya did not know Thobejane, Cabonge disputed it. “He knows her. I have sat with the general and Tebogo a couple of times… maybe because he meets a lot of girls around me.” Cabonge made this statement among several claims in the recording, which also touched on alleged dealings involving Sibiya, Matlala and suspended Sergeant Fannie Nkosi. Dispute The state prosecutor, Velile Makasana, sought to introduce the recording during the bail proceedings. Sibiya’s legal team, comprising Amanda Nel and Estelle Kilian, objected to playing the audio clip in court. Allegations Beyond the discussion about Thobejane, Cabonge made several allegations concerning the relationship between Sibiya and Matlala. He claimed the two men engaged in various dealings facilitated through Nkosi. Cabonge denied acting as an intermediary, saying the two men communicated directly through the suspended sergeant. “They were communicating via Nkosi. They removed me from the picture,” Cabonge is heard saying. Charges The proceedings come as Sibiya faces charges of sexual grooming, human trafficking, rape and a firearm-related offence following his arrest at a strip club in Sandton on 21 September 2026. He is accused of sexually grooming Mr M’s 16-year-old daughter. The state alleges that Sibiya exchanged explicit material involving the minor in WhatsApp communications between 20 July and 3 August 2026. The alleged rape of an 18-year-old reportedly occurred on 16 May 2026. Resignation Sibiya, who resigned from the South African Police Service on 12 October, has rejected the charges against him. His bail application will continue on Wednesday, 14 October. Additional reporting by Molefe Seeletsa

Angelique Gerber has shared a cryptic post alluding to her ex, Jacques Potgieter. This comes after the actress and the former Springbok fuelled rumours that they had reconciled following a four-year separation. During that time, Jacques dated another woman, whom he split from in June. Jacques and Angelique married in 2016 and have three children together: son Jacques Jnr and twin daughters Annabella and Olivia. ANGELIQUE GERBER THROWS SHADE AT EX, JACQUES POTGIETER? In several since-deleted posts, the former couple are seen embracing each other. In one pic, Jacques carried Angelique in the air, whilst in a third, she sat on his lap. “I hit the bullseye”, he captioned the post. Jacques Potgieter and Angelique Gerber wed a decade ago on a wine farm in the Western Cape. The couple began dating in 2014, when Angelique played the popular character “Clara” on the now-defunct SABC soapie 7de Laan. In mid 2022, Jacques allegedly admitted to being unfaithful to his Springbok wife, Angelique Gerber in a series of Instagram Stories. At the same time, Angeliqe posted a cryptic post on her IG Stories that read: “The truth always comes out”. Jacques later claimed his account was “hacked” and assured the public the accusations about his marriage and alleged affairs were false. Angelique then posted an apology on her account, implying the same. By Christmas, it was clear the couple had officially split after removing all romantic posts featuring each other. To further fuel the fire, Jacques began posting pictures with his new girlfriend, Lizane Wagner. Fast forward to 2023, and Angelique put Jacques Potgieter on blast for failing to financially support their three children. In June, the retired rugby player – now a head coach for Centurion Rugby Club – split from Lizane. This followed a four-year relationship with the woman many have accused of being behind his marriage breakdown. Speaking to an Afrikaans publication, Lizane confirmed their break-up, adding that she was not the “other woman” in her ex’s marriage.

Pensioner feeding several dependants on one SASSA grant shares his biggest fear
A Mpumalanga pensioner says his biggest concern is not his own survival but his children’s future. The Older Person’s Grant recipient, who asked to remain anonymous, shared his story in The South African’s SASSA grant survey. He has received the grant for three years. Five people depend on that single grant at home, and he says it simply does not stretch far enough. Children’s future weighs on the pensioner When asked about his biggest financial concern, the pensioner pointed to his children’s future. That worry is rooted in a hard reality. Someone in his household has gone without food in the past month. He regularly struggles to make ends meet and runs out of money before the month ends. He spends his grant on a mix of essentials, from food to everyday household costs. With several people relying on one income, every rand is already accounted for long before the next payment arrives. Owning his home gives the family a roof over their heads, but it does not guarantee food on the table. Still searching for work The pensioner is unemployed and actively looking for work. He has experience in construction and general labour and says he is willing to relocate for the right opportunity. He believes a job would give his family the security the grant alone cannot provide. Long queues and waiting times at SASSA offices remain his biggest challenge with the grant system, although he says his payments have been straightforward. He rates SASSA’s communication with recipients as poor and has never applied for additional government support because he did not know what else was available. His call for a bigger grant The pensioner acknowledges that the grant helps his household. “The grants does help a little bit,” he said. However, he wants to see the amount rise. “If it can be increased it will be better,” he added. He suggested R5 000 a month would make a real difference for families like his. If he could change one thing about SASSA, he would increase the grant amount. For now, he continues to stretch one grant across an entire household while hoping for a better future for his children.
