Cape Town braces for N1 delays as crews repair damaged 50-tonne bridge
Motorists travelling on the N1 in Cape Town face traffic disruptions on Monday as City engineers continue urgent repairs to a damaged pedestrian bridge on FW de Klerk Boulevard following a truck collision over the weekend. The bridge, located near Paarden Eiland between Church Street and the Cape Town CBD, sustained significant damage on Saturday night when a truck struck it, forcing the closure of sections of the N1 in both directions while emergency repair work got underway. Repairs According to the City, engineers worked around the clock to stabilise and realign the structure. The operation involved two cranes lifting and repositioning a massive section of the bridge weighing about 100 tonnes. City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas said teams had made significant progress overnight. “Our engineers and contractors have worked tirelessly through the night to ensure the damaged bridge is made safe and to minimise disruption to commuters. “We have successfully realigned the affected section of the bridge, allowing the N1 inbound to reopen for the morning commute,” Quintas said. Traffic While inbound traffic into the CBD has resumed, the N1 outbound remained closed at the time of the update as repair work continued. “The safety of road users remains our highest priority. Although we have achieved important milestones, further assessments and repairs are required before the outbound lanes can be reopened safely,” Quintas said. Planning He urged motorists to plan ahead and consider alternative routes while crews continue working at the site. “We appreciate the patience and cooperation of residents and commuters during this complex operation. Our teams are committed to reopening all affected lanes as soon as it is safe to do so.” The City confirmed that Lower Church Street remains open to traffic in both directions, providing an alternative access route to and from the CBD. Officials said repair teams would continue working to restore full traffic flow and minimise the impact on commuters using one of Cape Town’s busiest transport corridors.

Chicago Marathon result: Top 25 finish for Adriaan Wildschutt
South Africa’s Adriaan Wildschutt made his marathon debut at Sunday’s Chicago Marathon, clocking 2:11:23 after a challenging second half of the race. Wildschutt showed his potential over the opening stages, reaching halfway in 1:02:32 and running at a pace that put the South African marathon record within reach. However, the 27-year-old was unable to maintain that pace over the second half and finished in 2:11:23 – which was good enough for 25th place overall. National record Wildschutt posted a 59:13 half marathon debut in Valencia – a South African national record earlier this year and won the NYC Half in March. Despite falling short of his stated pre-race goals, the performance marked an important milestone in his transition to marathon running. For Adriaan Wildschutt, the 2:11:23 finish offers a benchmark for future races as he looks to build on his achievements on the track and over shorter road distances. Brother Nadeel also faces tough Chicago race Wildschutt’s brother, Nadeel, also lined up for the Chicago Marathon with hopes of producing a personal best. He passed the halfway mark in 1:03:41 and was on course for a strong performance before being unable to finish the race. However, shortly after the 25km mark he cramped badly and was forced to step off the course. Although the Chicago Marathon did not deliver the results either brother had hoped for, their attempts marked another step in their development as long-distance runners. Meanwhile, Amos Kipruto of Kenya won the men’s race in 2:01:09, while Ethiopia’s Hawi Feysa clocked 2:13:33 to win her second straight women’s title.
