‘I thought it was a prank’: Witness recounts moments after AKA and Tibz shooting
Warning: This article contains graphic details that some readers may find upsetting. A witness has detailed the terrifying moments after gunfire erupted outside a restaurant where rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his friend, Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, were killed, claiming he initially mistook the shots for fireworks. Club promoter Simphiwe Ngidi testified before the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) High Court in Durban on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, as the trial of seven men accused of the murders of Forbes and Motsoane continued. AKA-Tibz murder trial: Witness recounts shooting aftermath Ngidi told the court in his evidence-in-chief that he had collected Forbes and his entourage from King Shaka International Airport before taking them to their hotel and later to the now-defunct Wish restaurant on Florida Road, where the two men were fatally shot on 10 February 2023. According to the witness, the group had finished dinner and moved outside the restaurant to say their goodbyes when the shooting occurred. He testified he initially did not realise the seriousness of what was happening, believing the loud noise and flashes he saw could have been fireworks. “I heard a loud bang. I thought it was fireworks because I remember just seeing sparks and sparks thinking it was fireworks. In my head, I thought it was a prank. “I thought maybe someone was really playing with fireworks and I’m like ‘who the hell would do this’. “As that was happening, I heard someone say ‘they got a gun’ and I pushed into the passage way then we ran inside,” Ngidi said. The witness continued to say that the reality of the shooting became apparent when he saw Forbes and Motsoane after the attack. “I saw Tibz was injured and Kiernan was on the floor. Tibz was crawling inside the passage, trying to move away from the outside area where the incident happened. “There was blood coming out of Kiernan’s body, and I think that’s when we kind of came to a realisation that he might have died or passed on.” The promoter added him, and those at the scene contacted emergency medical services and tried to secure the crime scene despite the shock of witnessing the incident. “[We were] trying to control the situation even though it’s hard because we are not used to this kind of thing.” Seven accused face murder charges Seven men are standing trial in connection with the killings. The group includes Lindokuhle Thabani Mkhwanazi (accused one), Lindani Zenzele Ndimane (accused two), Siyanda Eddie Myeza (accused three), Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni (accused four), Lindokuhle Mhlaliseni Mkhwanazi (accused five), Siyabonga Gezani Ndimande (accused six), and Malusi Dave Ndimande (accused seven). The accused face a range of charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder and offences related to illegal firearms and ammunition. The state alleges that the suspects were paid R800 000 for their involvement in the killings. The prosecution has previously presented evidence they say links the accused to the murders, including cellphone records, CCTV footage, bank records and vehicle registration information. Judge eases media restrictions Ngidi’s testimony came after Judge Nomfundo Sipunzi relaxed restrictions on media coverage of the proceedings. The court had initially imposed stringent limitations on reporting the trial. Under the revised ruling, witnesses may be identified and their testimony broadcast unless the court issues a directive prohibiting it. The trial continues in the KZN High Court in Durban.

Chiefs held again in Stellies draw
Kaizer Chiefs returned from the international break as unconvincing as they were before it, only managing a 1-1 Betway Premiership draw at home to Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday evening. Chiefs stuck in the mud Amakhosi remain unbeaten in the league but have drawn their last three matches, Fernando Da Cruz’ side stuck in a gear that does not befit title challengers. Mduduzi Shabalala’s sharp finish levelled the scores at FNB Stadium after Sinoxolo Kwayiba had put Gavin Hunt’s Stellies in front. And Chiefs were incensed after being denied a late penalty shout for handball. But all three points would have been kind to an Amakhosi side that simply did not threaten enough. In midst of a slight central midfield injury crisis, Chiefs head coach Da Cruz picked Reeve Frosler to do a job alongside Sibongiseni Mthethwa. There was also a late change to the teamsheet, with Mduduzi Shabalala coming in after Faiz Abrahams was named in the original line-up. Had someone forgotten that Abrahams is on loan at Chiefs from Stellies and therefore could not play? Shabalala created Chiefs’ best chance of the first half, hitting a great through ball on the half hour mark for Wandile Duba. The Chiefs striker delayed his shot, however, and Sage Stephens made a good block. Stellenbosch had four former Chiefs players in their starting line-up, with Njabulo Blom making his debut. Given Msimango, George Matlou and Ashley Du Preez also played from the off against their former club. Blom looked keen to prove a point against Amakhosi, and in the 21st minute he slid a fine ball through to Kwabiya, who rattled the woodwork. Two minutes after the break, it was Stellies who went in front. This time Kwayiba made no mistake, lifting Terrence Mashego’s fine cross into the roof of the net. Stellies nearly doubled their lead in the 50th minute. Quinton Plaatjies got to the byline all too easily and his cut back was hit towards goal by Mashego only to deflect just wide. Shabba strikes Whoever was in charge of the big screens at the stadium then had the temerity to put the Pirates game on, as if Chiefs fans were not already miserable enough. But Shabalala soon had them smiling, turning inside the box and slotting a clever finish past Stephens at his near post.

Jacques Potgieter and Angelique Gerber wed a decade ago on a wine farm in the Western Cape. The couple began dating in 2014, when Angelique played the popular character “Clara” on the now-defunct SABC soapie 7de Laan. In mid 2022, Jacques allegedly admitted to being unfaithful to his Springbok wife, Angelique Gerber in a series of Instagram Stories. At the same time, Angeliqe posted a cryptic post on her IG Stories that read: “The truth always comes out”. Jacques later claimed his account was “hacked” and assured the public the accusations about his marriage and alleged affairs were false. Angelique then posted an apology on her account, implying the same. By Christmas, it was clear the couple had officially split after removing all romantic posts featuring each other. To further fuel the fire, Jacques began posting pictures with his new girlfriend, Lizane Wagner. Fast forward to 2023, and Angelique put Jacques Potgieter on blast for failing to financially support their three children. Speaking to an Afrikaans publication, Lizane confirmed their break-up, adding that she was not the “other woman” in her ex’s marriage.

Pensioner feeding several dependants on one SASSA grant shares his biggest fear
A Mpumalanga pensioner says his biggest concern is not his own survival but his children’s future. The Older Person’s Grant recipient, who asked to remain anonymous, shared his story in The South African’s SASSA grant survey. He has received the grant for three years. Five people depend on that single grant at home, and he says it simply does not stretch far enough. Children’s future weighs on the pensioner When asked about his biggest financial concern, the pensioner pointed to his children’s future. That worry is rooted in a hard reality. Someone in his household has gone without food in the past month. He regularly struggles to make ends meet and runs out of money before the month ends. He spends his grant on a mix of essentials, from food to everyday household costs. With several people relying on one income, every rand is already accounted for long before the next payment arrives. Owning his home gives the family a roof over their heads, but it does not guarantee food on the table. Still searching for work The pensioner is unemployed and actively looking for work. He has experience in construction and general labour and says he is willing to relocate for the right opportunity. He believes a job would give his family the security the grant alone cannot provide. Long queues and waiting times at SASSA offices remain his biggest challenge with the grant system, although he says his payments have been straightforward. He rates SASSA’s communication with recipients as poor and has never applied for additional government support because he did not know what else was available. His call for a bigger grant The pensioner acknowledges that the grant helps his household. “The grants does help a little bit,” he said. However, he wants to see the amount rise. “If it can be increased it will be better,” he added. He suggested R5 000 a month would make a real difference for families like his. If he could change one thing about SASSA, he would increase the grant amount. For now, he continues to stretch one grant across an entire household while hoping for a better future for his children. Win R2 000 in the South African SASSA grant survey If you receive a SASSA grant and want to share your story, we want to hear from you. Take part in our survey and stand a chance to win R2 000.
