Chiefs’ Moloisane ready for Stellies reunion
Thabo Moloisane is looking forward to an “emotional” reunion with his former club when Kaizer Chiefs take on Stellenbosch in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday at FNB Stadium. Chiefs’ Moloisane – Stellies clash ‘will be an emotional one’ Moloisane joined Chiefs this season as a free agent after a three-year stint at Stellies, and the 27-year-old central defender has played in all of Chiefs’ last five league games. “I have to express my gratitude to the club (Stellenbosch) for the role they played in my career, but I am also grateful for the opportunity to play for a big club like Chiefs,” said Moloisane on Monday at the Chiefs Village in Naturena. “Tomorrow will be an emotional one, they (Stellies) Played a big role in my journey to get here so it will be fun for me. I enjoy these types of games.” Moloisane has an affinity for Chiefs that started in his childhood as he grew up in Soweto. “Fortunately for me this is a club I know, growing up just down the road,” he said. “I have a deep love for Chiefs, they are literally all I know. As a small boy I remember coming here to fetch tickets. For me now it is time to write my own history and for my name to be counted.” This has clearly helped a move to Amakhosi that Moloisane describes as “seamless”. ‘It was important to learn’ “The first couple of games I didn’t play, but it was important to learn from the bench,” he added. “I must just continue working hard and make sure I play my role.” Chiefs are unbeaten in the Premiership in their first seven matches, but have drawn four of them, which leaves Fernando Da Cruz’ side already lagging behind Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in the title race. “We must remember we have a new coach,” said Moloisane. “He is familiar with the club (Da Cruz spent time working with former Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi ahead of the 2024/25 season). But at the same time he is a new coach and we are learning his system and working hard to make sure his system works. We haven’t lost a game and tomorrow’s game is extremely important.” Chiefs’ tally of 13 points from seven games is one less than they managed at the same stage last season. But Moloisane insists they are making progress. “100 percent,” he said. “Even from me looking from the outside last season, and looking from the inside now, the team is playing much better, we are playing really well. It is unfortunate we don’t have wins from some games that we drew, but the system is working.”

Confirmed: Jake White to coach Fiji at 2027 Rugby World Cup
Fiji appointed Rugby World Cup-winning coach Jake White on Tuesday to lead the team into next year’s tournament in Australia. The 62-year-old South African masterminded the Springboks’ 2007 World Cup triumph and went on to coach teams in Australia, South Africa, France and Japan. He was technical adviser to Tonga before joining the Bulls in Pretoria in 2020 as director of rugby. He stood down last year. The experienced White “understands what it takes to build a World Cup-winning team”, said John Sanday, chairman of Fijian rugby. “His experience, leadership and championship mentality are exactly the qualities we want to bring into our preparations for Rugby World Cup 2027,” Sanday said. White said: “Fiji holds a special place in world rugby. “There are very few nations where the game means so much to its people, and where the players bring such extraordinary natural ability, courage and passion to the field.” Rugby’s biggest-ever World Cup kicks off in October next year with a record 24 teams clashing over six weeks in Australia. Fiji will play their first game against Spain on October 4 at Newcastle Stadium.

A pioneering South African drone flew years before UAVs were a thing
A South African drone was flying over Angola’s battlefields long before Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) had entered the public consciousness. And despite the complicated Apartheid context, it’s yet another example that South Africa used to do pretty remarkable things …   The Seeker South African drone was developed by a state arms company called Kentron. Only later would this morph into Denel Dynamics. You must remember that Apartheid South Africa existed under a hefty arm embargo. So, it had to develop all its own military weapons for protection. KENTRON SEEKER SOUTH AFRICAN DRONE The UAV first entered South African Air Force (SAAF) service in 1986. And it flew with 10 Squadron from Potchefstroom to provide reconnaissance and artillery fire control. The South African drone first saw combat deployment in Angola during Operation Modular in 1987. Remarkably, the UAV carried a television camera that beamed live images back to its handlers. It could stay aloft for up to 10 hours at around 18 000 feet with a 40-kg payload. Its job was to find targets and help direct the G5 howitzer’s long-range fire, without risking a pilot. BEFORE DRONES WERE COMMON PLACE Angolan missiles and artillery struggled to connect with this early Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Image: Wikipedia Now, while the internet loves to call this South African drone the first of its kind, it’s widely acknowledged by military historians that the Israeli Scout predates the Kentron Seeker. However, the Seeker was actually developed with covert Israeli support. Likewise, the first Seekers was unarmed and for reconnaissance only. Therefore, armed variants, the Seeker 400, only came later. Nevertheless, the Kentron Seeker was wildly successful in its first sorties. While the exact tally is debated, its loss rate was very low. It was small, fast, hard to hit and sturdy even when it was. Some say as few as three were downed by the enemy. And even that was a ‘relatively cheap’ price to pay because it carried no crew. A Seeker lost to an expensive missile was a trade-off the SAAF was glad to make for the intelligence gained. LEGACY LIVES ON The pioneering legacy of this South African drone lasts on. 10 Squadron stopped UAV operations in November 1990 and disbanded by March 1991, but the Seeker line continued its development under Denel. They were sold abroad, with operators today reportedly including the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Algeria today. But what do you think? Did you know about the pioneering Kentron Seeker South African drone? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below …
