Pirates coach Ouaddou not happy despite Galaxy win
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou voiced his frustration despite his side’s victory over TS Galaxy. The Buccaneers bounced back from a disappointing MTN8 final loss to Mamelodi Sundowns with a 3-0 win over the Rockets at Orlando Amstel Arena on Tuesday evening. Despite the convincing win, Ouaddou was not happy with the way his players failed to manage the game. “Look, I think it was a good reaction from our boys; you know it’s not easy when you lose the final, and you have to come back and get the result, so well done for that reaction, well done for the three goals,” Ouaddou told SuperSport TV after the match. “We will retain today’s result because, to be honest, I cannot be satisfied with how we managed the game, how we kept possession; we lost too many balls in the middle, and I think for a team of a high level you cannot lose so many balls in the middle. “I think it’s something that bothered me, to be honest; we have to fix this. But let’s be happy, let’s congratulate the boys; we had, I think, a good moment to imbalance that opponent,” he added. Ouaddou admitted it was difficult to break down the compact Galaxy defence. “It was not easy; we played against a good TS Galaxy, very compact, and I think we managed to break this block, finding the spaces between the lines to overload. We wanted to overload this midfielder and to play in behind; I think we did it, but let’s rest the boys and think for the Champions League,” commented Ouaddou. Pirates will face African Stars in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the CAF Champions League in Namibia on Saturday.

Labour Court blocks Manamela’s move to re-advertise NSF CEO post
Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela will have to wait for the outcome of a court review before proceeding with his directive to re-advertise the National Skills Fund (NSF) executive officer position. The Labour Court on Tuesday, 13 October, granted an interim interdict preventing the implementation of Manamela’s directive, pending the final determination of a review application brought by Dr Khathutshelo Innocent Sirovha. The ministry said Manamela had noted the judgment and would comply with the court order. “The Minister respects the judgment and will comply fully with the Court’s order,” the ministry said. Court has not made final ruling The ministry stressed that the judgment did not settle the dispute over the recruitment process or determine whether Manamela’s directive to re-advertise the position was lawful. It also clarified that the court had not declared Sirovha appointed as the NSF executive officer. “The Court has not made a final determination on the lawfulness of the directive nor has it declared Dr Sirovha appointed as Executive Officer,” the ministry said. The interim interdict will remain in place pending the final determination of Sirovha’s substantive review application. Manamela commits to fair recruitment The minister reiterated his commitment to lawful and transparent recruitment processes, sound governance and the effective functioning of the NSF and institutions in the post-school education and training (PSET) sector. The ministry said Manamela would not comment further on the merits of the case while the judicial proceedings remained under way. “Given that this matter is currently before the courts, the Minister will not comment on the merits of the case while judicial proceedings are under way,” it said. The NSF is part of the post-school education and training sector overseen by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Cardoso gives update on Saleng’s future at Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has given an update on winger Monnapule Saleng. The 28-year-old winger is yet to appear for Masandawana this season due to off the field related issues. Last week, Saleng was seen training with the Sundowns first team for the first time. Although he did not play in the MTN8 final this past weekend, many fans saw it as a positive sign that the former Orlando Pirates was back in the coach’s good books. Speaking to the media, Cardoso revealed that Saleng was training with the team. Saleng spotted training with Sundowns first team “Look, in the same way I spoke about Saleng when I last spoke about him, we as a club, me, the Sport Director, the players, the captains and the chairman, we decided to give ourselves and Saleng an opportunity to move forward in a positive way,” Cardoso told iDiski Times. “Saleng trained during a period alone and he trained quite consistently and with respect of the values that we need to have inside a professional team. And since he joined the team, he has kept that path. So we are happy that he shows consistency on training.” Saleng joined Sundowns from Pirates in January and went on to make a handful of appearances for the club. It was mentioned by Cardoso that the player failed to travel with the team several times towards last season and was completely dropped from the team and was forced to train alone. Will Saleng last this season?

Former Pirates winger to face Sundowns in CAF Champions League
A former Orlando Pirates winger is expected to be in action against Mamelodi Sundowns. Angola’s Wiliete SC face the reigning African champions across two legs later this month. These CAF Champions League ties could be redemption for Angolan winger Gilberto. Who is Gilberto? Gilberto, whose real name is Deivi Miguel Vieira, may be familiar to PSL fans. He joined Orlando Pirates on a three-year deal from Petro Atletico de Luanda in June 2024, according to iDiski Times. However, the Angolan winger struggled for a regular place under former coach Jose Riveiro. Gilberto was then loaned back to his former club, where he made 26 appearances, scoring once and providing 2 assists. He was eventually released from his Pirates contract in June 2026 with about a year remaining. According to Transfermarkt, Gilberto made just 12 appearances for the Buccaneers without a goal contribution. What happened after he left Orlando Pirates? Since leaving, the former Pirates winger is trying to revitalise his domestic and international career. Gilberto was recalled by Angola’s national team for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers in September and October. He stayed on the bench in the draw against Egypt, and was a late substitute in the 3-1 win against Malawi on 6 October. He also scored for his current club Wiliete in the CAF Champions League first preliminary round against Foresters FC. The team advanced to the second preliminary round 5-0 on aggregate. Gilberto now has a chance to redeem himself in a high-stakes environment in a few days’ time. Wiliete vs Mamelodi Sundowns: Fixture details Wiliete hosts the South African giants on 18 October at the Ombaka National Stadium in Angola. The Mamelodi Sundowns website lists the kickoff time as 16:00. The return leg will be played on 23 October at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria (20:00). Whoever wins across the 2 legs advances to the CAF Champions League group stage. According to the CAF website, the opening round of the competition gets underway at the end of November.
