R100m drug lab accused remain behind bars after court appearance
Five accused arrested following the discovery of a clandestine drug manufacturing laboratory at a farm, with an estimated street value of R100 million, will remain behind bars until their next court appearance. The accused, Trent Coetzer (36), Nakedi Makwesi (44), Evan-Lee Mohapi (25), Donell Coetzer (28), and Lyle Johnson (21), appeared before the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 October 2026. Charges They are facing charges relating to the manufacturing of and dealing in illegal drugs. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the matter was postponed to 21 October 2026 for the verification of the accused’s residential addresses and the hearing of a formal bail application. He said all five accused remain in custody. “The National Prosecuting Authority remains committed to working closely with law enforcement agencies to combat organised crime and to ensure that those involved in the manufacture and distribution of illegal drugs are held accountable before the law.” Drug lab The multi-million-rand clandestine drug manufacturing laboratory was uncovered at a farm in Hekpoort near Krugersdorp, Gauteng. The accused were handcuffed after law enforcement authorities received information regarding suspected illegal drug manufacturing activities at the premises. Arrest Following the issuing of a search warrant, officers conducted a search operation at the farm, where a clandestine drug laboratory was discovered. Officers arrested the five accused at the scene. The Hawks’ Narcotics Bureau led the operation, working with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Head Office Crime Intelligence, the Special Task Force, and the West Rand K-9 Unit. Millions Preliminary estimates place the value of the laboratory and its contents at approximately R100 million. The latest bust adds to a growing list of high-value drug laboratory takedowns across the country as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to dismantle organised crime syndicates involved in the production and distribution of illicit substances.

Mantashe irks Cosatu congress as delegates decry ANC’s ‘Big Brother’ attitude
ANC national chair Gwede Mantashe came under fire from the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) congress delegates yesterday, who expressed anger at the ANC’s “Big Brother” attitude and accused it of undermining the union federation at a crucial meeting of its highest decision-making structure. Mantashe was routed by Cosatu union affiliates when he demanded to speak last, after the SA Communist Party as the ANC leads the tripartite alliance. Mantashe came under fire from Cosatu congress delegates But Cosatu refused to change its programme to accommodate Mantashe’s request. Earlier, Mantashe was booed by the congress delegates when his name was mentioned by SACP general secretary Solly Mapaila as he greeted him at the start of his address to the congress. While the federation’s affiliates were clearly divided over the alliance unity and the choice between the ANC and SACP in the 4 November local elections, they closed ranks in condemning Mantashe. One affiliate after another stood to voice their opposition, expressed anger at Mantashe’s “unbecoming behaviour”, and called on the ANC to take action against its national chair. The session chair, Mike Shingange, said that neither the ANC, nor Mantashe were booted out of the congress, but Cosatu refused to change its programme to allow his request to speak last. Affiliates such as South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) criticised what it called “ANC arrogance”. Samwu criticised ANC arrogance “They are an alliance partner; they must not play Big Brother in this congress and undermine Cosatu. “We know this is not the ANC behaviour, but that of an individual,” said a Samwu speaker, who also called for the ANC to censure Mantashe for his “ill behaviour”. “He has not been chased away, but he wants Cosatu to change its programme and that is not going to happen in this congress.” A Democratic Nurses Organisation of SA member was more scathing about Mantashe. “The conduct of the ANC chair must be condemned; the ANC must make a decision to sanction its chair. “We know that the ANC chair’s conduct does not represent the stance of the ANC structures and branches. Arrogance of ANC ‘killing the party’ “However, the ANC is still welcomed to participate in the congress but will not speak or address this meeting,” the member said. The Cosatu affiliates said the arrogance of the ANC as demonstrated by Mantashe, is “killing the party” and came at the wrong time when people were angry with the party. They said Mantashe had single-handedly adopted a strategy to destroy the ANC. Zola Saphetha, National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union general secretary, said Mantashe’s behaviour was disappointing, especially coming from a Cosatu product like he was. Mantashe is a former National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) general secretary. Saphetha said: “We want to reject the Big Brother’ syndrome of the ANC.” NUM, through its general secretary, said the ANC had missed the opportunity to lobby for support ahead of the elections.

Oceanfront property with direct beach access for R550 000
Ever wondered what it would cost to own a property metres from the beach? Well, in this South Coast town, you can buy an oceanfront property for R550 000. Then build your dream home. Beachfront Property for R550 000 In most towns, a beachfront property costs millions. Even a small slice of oceanfront land is upwards of R1 million in most areas across South Africa’s vast coast. Yet, in one small town, you can live stone-throwing distance from the beach for only R550 000. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The property, in Mtwalume, was listed on 17 September 2026. One plot is 1 893 square metres, and the adjoining parcel is 3 181 square metres. Rates are R400. But because the plot is on sale for R550 000, you can get a land loan for 80% of the land’s value. This means the loan will cover R440 000 and you need to provide the remaining R110 000 in cash. Where else can you get affordable seaside property? According to a report by The South African, buyers can get a beachfront property for R600 000 in Port Nolloth on the Namaqua Coast. The town is in the Northern Cape, where the water temperature reaches 14°C. That may seem icy cold, until you consider that summer temperatures rise to 41 °C in Port Nolloth. But in Mtwalume, water temperatures average 23°C. In Summer, Mtwalume remains pleasant, with an average temperature of 28°C in December. The town can be humid, with plenty of spring and summer thunderstorms. Yet thunderstorms will be the least of your worries when your property leads directly to a pristine white sand beach. Want to buy the property? Unfortunately, you may already be too late. According to the Private Property listing, the property is already under offer.
