Proteas in trouble after day two of rain-hit Test against Australia
After a slow start to the second Test, Australia were in control, but there was still a lot of cricket to play against the Proteas after two days of limited action in Gqeberha. At the close of play on Monday, the SA team were on 97/5, with only 43 overs having been bowled over the first two days of the match. Temba Bavuma was on 41 runs not out after facing 108 balls overnight, and Wiaan Mulder was unbeaten on two off 15. Resuming their first innings at 20/2 in the final session of the day, after play was delayed due to rain, the home side were unable to gain any real traction. After waiting patiently for play to get underway after tea, the SA team were placed under early pressure when debutant Marques Ackerman fell in the third over of the day, caught behind for just six runs after facing 38 balls overnight. Soon afterwards, Matthew Breetzke was also caught behind, getting an outside edge to wicketkeeper Alex Carey off a Micthell Starc delivery after contributing four runs. And the Proteas continued to tumble. Ryan Rickelton, who was given a life when he was dropped by Marnus Labuschagne in the slips on 26, was also caught behind just two overs later after hitting 31 off 51. Seam bowler Scott Boland led Australia’s attack, taking 4/31 as he played a key role to put the hosts on the back foot.

Beachgoers and anglers: Here’s what Tuesday’s tides look like
If you’re heading to the coast on Tuesday, check the tide times before planning your activities. Water levels change throughout the day, while wind, waves, swell and the shape of the seabed also affect conditions along the shore and at sea. Damaging winds and waves along the KZN coast The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds and waves along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline These conditions could temporarily disrupt beachfront activities and operations at small harbours and ports until Tuesday morning. Beachgoers, anglers and others planning coastal activities should follow the latest weather warnings and check local sea conditions before heading out. When to expect the next spring tide Spring tides are important to watch out for because they bring higher high tides and lower low tides than usual. The next spring tide is expected around the full moon on Monday, 26 October 2026. These changes can affect swimming, surfing and fishing. High tides may cover rocks and reefs, while low tides expose more of the shoreline. Check the tide times and the latest weather and marine warnings before you head to the coast.

‘Half a loaf is better than nothing’: Why some SASSA recipients are saying thank you
Not every SASSA grant recipient met festive season payment news with anger. A number of South Africans used the moment to express gratitude for the support they receive. The comments, posted on The South African’s Facebook page, offer a different side to a conversation dominated by frustration over grant amounts. ‘At least we are receiving something’ Mpho Joyce put it simply. “Half a loaf is better than nothing thank you,” she wrote, adding a smiling and praying emoji. Zandile Macu shared a more personal reason for her thanks, pointing to the role grants play in single-parent households. “I just want to appreciate and thank you, SASSA, for helping us when there is no father at home, at least we are receiving something rather than nothing. “keep it up guys” Keep it up, guys, with good work,” she wrote. Macu’s comment highlights how the Child Support Grant often serves as a lifeline for mothers raising children alone. Faith and perspective from the SASSA recipients Some commenters turned to faith. Christelle Van Biljon wrote in Afrikaans: “SE Liewers dnk Vir GOD wat one help,” which loosely translates to a call to rather thank God for the help received. Olivia Hossell focused on older recipients, writing: “This can help the elderly.” Francina Radebe kept it short with a simple “Thanks.” The December bonus question Not everyone was fully satisfied. Nokuthula Bhanana raised a question many recipients ask every year. “Sassa suppose to give an extra money in December, is that too much?” she wrote. The idea of a December bonus or “13th cheque” for grant recipients circulates widely each year, but SASSA has repeatedly dismissed such claims. Recipients should rely only on official SASSA channels for information about payments and be wary of social media posts promising extra money. Bhanana’s question shows how even grateful recipients feel the pressure of the festive season. The mixed reactions reveal a divided community. While some recipients feel the grants fall far short of what they need, others see them as essential support that keeps their households going, especially in homes with no other income.
