Recipe of the day: Orange fennel salad with pralined almonds and smoked paprika
Chef and Cape Town food personality Karen Dudley has always had a knack for making vegetables feel like the main event rather than something relegated to the side of the plate. Her Orange Fennel Salad with Pralined Almonds and Smoked Paprika is a particularly good fit for Garden Day. It brings together oranges, fennel, watercress, mint and thyme with the richness of feta and the crunch of a smoked paprika almond praline. It is colourful, fresh and full of ingredients that let the garden do much of the talking. Ingredients 6 medium oranges, using one or two Cara Cara or blood oranges if available 2 large fennel bulbs, very finely sliced Maldon sea salt 80g soft Danish feta, gently broken into bite-sized pieces A good handful of watercress 10g picked mint leaves For the almond praline 80g flaked almonds ½ tsp smoked paprika 100g castor sugar For the dressing 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 1 tbsp orange juice 2 tsp runny honey Leaves from a sprig of thyme or a pinch of dried thyme 7 tbsp olive oil ½ tsp toasted cumin seeds 1 tsp smoked paprika Method To make the praline, prepare a baking sheet with a silicone mat or baking paper and lightly butter it. Toss the flaked almonds with the paprika. Sprinkle the sugar over the base of a heavy-based frying pan and heat until the edges begin to caramelise and the sugar melts to a pale golden colour. Do not leave it unattended or stir it. Immediately stir in the flaked almonds and quickly spread the praline over the prepared baking sheet as thinly and evenly as possible. Leave to cool in a dry place before breaking into fine shards or lightly crushing with a rolling pin. For the dressing, whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl and set aside. Slice the tops and bottoms off the oranges. Using a sharp paring knife, cut down the sides to remove the peel and pith, then slice the oranges into rounds, removing any pips. Trim the fennel bulbs, reserving the fronds for the salad. Cut the bulbs in half and remove the core, then slice very finely. Add the sliced fennel to the dressing. Pick through the watercress, discarding any very thick stems. In a shallow bowl or serving platter, layer the orange with the dressed fennel, fennel fronds, mint leaves, and feta. Finish with the pralined almonds and the remaining fennel and mint leaves. Sprinkle with a pinch of Maldon salt and dust with a little smoked paprika. Illegal sales, extortion and R63m costs: Macpherson details Knoflokskraal land occupation
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has announced plans to approach the courts over the occupation of state-owned land at Knoflokskraal, as government seeks to curb further development at the settlement and address allegations of illegal land sales. The application, scheduled to be filed at the Western Cape High Court on 19 October 2026, follows six months of investigations and unsuccessful efforts by the government to reach an agreement with those occupying the land. Knoflokskraal is located off the N2 highway between Grabouw and Botrivier, within the Theewaterskloof Municipality in the Western Cape. The disputed property consists of six state-owned farms covering approximately 2 000 hectares. The land had been earmarked for forestry by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment before members of the KhoiSan tribe occupied it during the Covid-19 lockdown in late 2020. While the government regards the occupation as unlawful, members of the community have claimed ancestral rights to the land. The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) estimates that more than 4 000 structures have since been erected on the land. Macpherson on Knoflokskraal land occupation Addressing the media on Monday, 12 October 2026, Macpherson contended that the DPWI had reached a point where legal intervention was necessary to address the ongoing situation. He described conditions at the settlement as “unsustainable” and emphasised that the time had come for “decisive action to install the rule of law”. “We are approaching the court with a comprehensive documentary record of what has happened at Knoflokskraal, what government has attempted to do, where it has not been successful, what has subsequently been uncovered by investigations, and what we believe is required to restore the rule of law,” Macpherson told reporters. The proposed proceedings will be divided into two stages. Part A will ask the court to authorise alternative methods of notifying affected residents and ensure that they have a reasonable opportunity to participate in the legal process. Part B will deal with the substantive relief sought by the government, including measures to restrict further occupation and prevent unlawful activities on the property. Macpherson stressed that the immediate objective was not to remove residents, but to prevent the situation from escalating. “I want to be absolutely clear: containment is not eviction. It is about freezing the situation to prevent it from deteriorating further,” Macpherson said. Watch the media briefing below: As part of the proposed court action, the department wants a comprehensive list of the people living at Knoflokskraal. The process is intended to establish the number of residents, household composition, when individuals arrived at the settlement, their socio-economic circumstances and any vulnerabilities they may face. It will also seek to document any cultural or heritage claims advanced by residents. According to Macpherson, an independent social facilitator will oversee the process. ‘Secondary holiday homes’ The department is also seeking an order prohibiting conduct it considers unlawful, including violence, intimidation and harassment directed at government officials and contractors. The proposed measures would further target illegal land transactions and the operation of parallel policing structures. A fourth component of the application will seek police assistance to enforce the court’s directives. Macpherson alleged that some individuals lived in Cape Town while maintaining secondary properties at Knoflokskraal “These are secondary holiday homes and we have previously detailed how some of them are being used as Airbnbs and some of them are restaurants.” The latest application follows previous legal interventions aimed at limiting the expansion of the settlement. Macpherson indicated that the department obtained containment orders in 2021 covering three properties at Knoflokskraal. Those court orders remain in force. Although sheriff enforcement operations led to the removal of structures, the occupation continued to grow. Whistleblowers raise concerns over alleged land sales The DPWI’s latest action also follows information received from whistleblowers in June 2026 concerning an alleged system for subdividing and selling portions of the state-owned property. Macpherson said the department had evidence indicating that pieces of land were allegedly being sold for R1 500 by community leaders. Investigators also received a database containing information on around 820 people who had allegedly purchased land or received allocations through the purported system. The department has further received allegations that residents were being charged levies to finance activities or pay for protection linked to the alleged unlawful allocation and subdivision of land. “In plain language, this is called extortion, which is also criminal and illegal,” Macpherson remarked. The department has since approached the South African Police Service (Saps). 2/ Allegations of illegal land sales, fraud, intimidation and violence have also been handed over to law enforcement for investigation and prosecution. Our approach will be guided by the evidence, the Constitution and the principles of fairness and transparency. No one is above… pic.twitter.com/5bxvvzJCDn— Dean Macpherson MP (@DeanMacpherson) October 12, 2026 Knoflokskraal response costs government more than R63 million The minister also highlighted the public expenditure associated with security and the enforcement of previous court orders at the settlement. Between April 2021 and June 2026, the department incurred more than R58 million in costs related to Knoflokskraal. An additional R5.47 million was spent on sheriff’s fees for serving and enforcing court orders. “These are enormous amounts of public money. “They demonstrate the consequences of allowing a situation to continue without a sustainable resolution, as well as the costs associated with ignoring the rule of law. “This cannot become the permanent model of governance at Knoflokskraal,” Macpherson added.

The best family-friendly beaches in and around Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
The Eastern Cape coastline stretches 800 kilometres. The water’s warm, and so are the people. You won’t be disappointed at any beaches, but for family outings, these are the best options. Seven Family-Friendly Beaches Close to Gqeberha Whether you want a beach in the city or don’t mind a short drive, these are your options close to Gqeberqa. Kings Beach Kings Beach is a blue flag beach in Humewood. The beach is ideal for a long day of sunbathing and water activities, because it stretches 1.6 kilometres and has lifeguards. There’s also plenty for children to do at the nearby playground and go-karting close to the parking centre. Hobie Beach Another blue flag, Hobie Beach also has a 5-star rating. The beach has fluffy white sand and lifeguards. It’s perfect for sunbathing and watersports. It’s also close to staple fast food restaurants, so if you forget to pack a picnic, you won’t have to abandon your beach setup. Maitland Beach This is a long, flat white sand beach in Uitenhage. It’s roughly a 25-minute drive from Gqeberha along the N2. The beach is perfect for building sand castles without large crowds. However, there are no lifeguards on duty. Blue Horizon Bay Tucked away from the city centre and just beside Maitland Beach is Blue Horizon Bay Beach. Consider this a “secret beach” known mainly to locals. But if you’re willing to drive the 30 minutes from Gqeberha, you can explore the fairly isolated beach and its gorgeous white sand. Kini Bay Beach Although there isn’t a lifeguard on duty, this is a great family beach because children can play safely in the naturally formed rock pools. This is also an explorer’s paradise. It’s a local favourite and a 25-minute drive from Gqeberha. Sardinia Bay Beach Sardinia Bay Beach is one of Gqeberha’s highest-rated beaches. It’s a 25-minute drive from the city centre, but it’s worth the trek. There aren’t crowds. The beach is large. The sand is white. And there’s a large green space where the family can picnic, and children can play. Being in the Sardinia Nature Reserve, you can be sure the beach is clean and pristine. Kabeljous Beach If you’re okay taking a bit of a drive or if you’re staying close to Jeffrey’s Bay, visit Kabeljous Beach. It’s 45 minutes from Gqeberha, but great if you want to avoid crowds and want a family-friendly day. There’s a small playground, green space, and flat white sand. The water’s also fairly calm, perfect for young children.

The reactions poured in on The South African’s Facebook page after the publication shared its report on November 2026 children’s grants. Calls to cap grants per child Several commenters argued that the system needs limits. Wendy Paviour proposed a sliding scale. “grant for one child, 50 % for second, nothing for third,” Paviour wrote, arguing that grants have left grandmothers caring for children while mothers spend on themselves. Elizabeth Jacobs was even more direct. “If you can’t afford a baby, don’t have one…” Jacobs wrote. Wade Hendricks suggested shifting money to older and disabled South Africans. “Limit grant to one child and cut the R370 and redirect funds to increase pensioners and disabilities pay,” Hendricks wrote. ‘Cancel the whole damn grant thingy’ Jay Mtungwa went further than anyone, calling for the entire grant system to be scrapped in favour of job creation. “Cancel the whole damn grant thing, better to put it into employment,” Mtungwa wrote, arguing that adult children should support their parents and fathers should support their children. His comment drew a mix of likes, hearts and laughing reactions, reflecting how divided the thread became. Parents say grants feed children. For millions of households, the Child Support Grant is often the only regular income, covering school transport, food and clothing. Research has repeatedly linked the grant to improved nutrition and school attendance among children in low-income homes. The debate also exposes a tension between generations. Pensioners in the thread want higher Older Persons Grants, while caregivers fear any review could reduce support for children. SASSA has not confirmed any plan to cap the Child Support Grant by number of children. Caregivers should watch SASSA’s official channels for confirmed details on any review and how it may affect November payments.
