North West police mourn two officers killed in separate crashes
The North West police are mourning the deaths of two South African Police Service (Saps) members who died in separate road accidents, including one that has gone viral on social media. Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams expressed deep sadness after Warrant Officer Ennice Nortman died in Lichtenburg and Constable Itumeleng Johannes Pule died near Ganyesa. Two officers killed in separate road accidents Nortman, 53, served with North West Provincial Crime Intelligence in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District. Pule was attached to the Vryburg Stock Theft and Endangered Species (STES) unit in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District. On Monday afternoon, Nortman sustained serious injuries after she was allegedly struck by a BMW SUV while crossing the driveway at Lichtenburg Mall along Dr Nelson Mandela Drive. Graphic footage of the alleged accident has circulated across social media. Warrant Officer struck by BMW SUV at Lichtenburg Mall The video shows the officer walking towards a pedestrian crossing and then hesitating when she sees the white vehicle. After pausing for a second, she continued to cross, but then the SUV struck her and ran her over. The driver gets out of the vehicle as witnesses walk toward the motionless Nortman. Colonel Adéle Myburgh said she was on duty during the incident, and emergency medical services transported her to the hospital for medical treatment. Tragically, Nortman succumbed to her injuries later that evening. The police arrested the driver following preliminary investigations. The Saps are investigating a case of murder while also pursuing charges relating to an alleged contravention of immigration legislation. The accused, Akilesh Gupta, 23, appeared before the Lichtenburg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 21 October. The court remanded him in custody until his next court appearance on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. Constable dies in collision on R378 road In a separate incident, Pule died in a collision on Sunday, at approximately 8.10pm on the R378 road, about 20 kilometres before Ganyesa. Myburgh said Pule was off duty and driving his own vehicle, a red Volkswagen Polo Vivo, when it collided with a Nissan NP200 travelling in the opposite direction. The constable’s wife, who was a passenger, sustained slight injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Pule was declared dead at the scene. Saps opened a case of culpable homicide at Ganyesa Police Station, and investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision. Lieutenant General Adams has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of both deceased officers. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery. “The loss of two of our members in separate road accidents, one of which is now a murder investigation, is deeply painful,” Adams said. “These officers served the organisation and their communities, and their passing is a reminder of the risks and uncertainties associated with life and duty.” Stop recording and sharing CCTV footage relating to crime incidents – Provincial Commissioner Meanwhile, the provincial commissioner urged community members to stop recording, sharing, or circulating CCTV footage and other video material relating to any crime incident on social media. Suliman Carrim hit with fresh charges in vehicle theft case
North West businessman Suliman Carrim faces fresh criminal charges linked to the alleged attempted theft of two vehicles belonging to Absa. Carrim appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Thursday, 22 October, in connection with allegations involving fraudulent bank documents and an attempt to move vehicles across the border. The case was postponed to 30 October for a bail application. The latest development adds to Carrim’s legal troubles as he awaits a separate bail ruling over his alleged failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission. CARRIM LINKED TO ALLEGED VEHICLE THEFT According to police, the latest charges stem from an incident at the Beitbridge border post on 22 July 2026. Officers intercepted two vehicles that were allegedly being transported from Mahikeng in the North West to Malawi. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said investigators established that arrangements had allegedly been made to obtain bank authorisation documents for the vehicles to leave South Africa. However, the required authorisation was allegedly not provided. Investigators believe fraudulent bank documents were subsequently arranged to facilitate the vehicles’ movement across the border. The vehicles were still under finance and were returned to the bank. Two suspects were initially arrested in connection with the incident. The Commission’s Recommendations Task Team added Carrim as an accused in the two cases on Wednesday, 21 October. The National Prosecuting Authority alleges that Carrim acted with others in an attempt to remove the vehicles from South Africa using fraudulent documentation. The allegations remain before the courts. MADLANGA COMMISSION CASE CONTINUES Carrim’s latest court appearance follows his arrest at OR Tambo International Airport earlier this month. He was arrested while preparing to travel abroad after allegedly failing to return to the Madlanga Commission despite being directed to appear. He appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, where the State opposed his release on bail. Prosecutors argued that he posed a flight risk. Carrim’s legal representatives disputed this and maintained that he intended to return to South Africa. The Pretoria court postponed its bail ruling to 28 October. Carrim remains in custody and is expected back in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on 30 October in connection with the vehicle case.

Bank account costs: How South Africa compares with Botswana
Bank customers in South Africa and Botswana face different charges for maintaining transactional accounts, with monthly fees and everyday transaction costs varying between banks. The differences highlight why consumers need to consider more than just the advertised monthly fee when choosing where to bank. How much do South African Bank customers pay? According to its official 2026 pricing guide, Capitec charges customers R7.50 per month to maintain its main account. The fees took effect on 1 March 2026. The bank also charges R2 for payments to other South African banks, R1 for payments to other Capitec customers and R3 for debit orders. Customers who withdraw cash at another bank’s ATM pay R10 for every R1 000 withdrawn, according to Capitec’s published tariffs. Meanwhile, First National Bank (FNB) offers an Easy Zero account with no monthly account fee. However, customers may still incur charges when conducting transactions. FNB publishes separate pricing guides for its various accounts, meaning customers need to check the charges applicable to their chosen product. What do Botswana bank customers pay? In Botswana, Botswana Savings Bank (BSB) lists a monthly maintenance fee of P60 for its transactional account. The account is designed for working people, young customers, pensioners and self-employed individuals. According to the bank’s official website, customers can deposit and withdraw money at BSB branches and ATMs. Opening the account costs P100, while its listed features include free monthly statements, transaction notifications and transfers between BSB accounts. BSB also offers an ordinary savings account with a lower monthly maintenance fee of P12. However, this is a different product, with withdrawal conditions that distinguish it from a standard transactional account. The bank lists a P3.30 fee for withdrawals at its ATMs and charges P25 for subsequent over-the-counter withdrawals after the first free withdrawal. Why the fees matter The published tariffs show that banking costs depend on the account customers choose and how frequently they transact. In South Africa, Capitec’s R7.50 monthly fee provides a clear baseline, while FNB’s Easy Zero account demonstrates that some products have no monthly maintenance charge. In Botswana, BSB’s P60 transactional account fee is higher than its P12 ordinary savings account fee, but the two products offer different facilities and conditions. Customers comparing banking costs across the two countries should therefore consider monthly maintenance, ATM withdrawals, electronic payments and other charges together. The figures are based on the banks’ published tariffs and should be checked against the latest pricing guides before opening an account.
