Hangwani Maumela seeking to halt the sale of his forfeited luxury assets – report
Controversial businessman Hangwani Maumela is wanting to have the court-ordered forfeiture of his luxury assets overturned. The Gauteng High Court in July granted the Asset Forfeiture Unit of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) a forfeiture order tied to Maumela’s homes and vehicles. Reports state that Maumela’s legal team recently engaged the NPA to appeal the intended sale of the assets. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) raided Maumela’s Sandhurst home in October 2025, where it confiscated millions in assets, including the infamous blue Lamborghinis. “The SIU has preserved R250.3 million in assets, including 11 luxury cars and eight properties, tied to the Tembisa Hospital corruption investigation,” the SIU previously stated. NPA informed of recission application The forfeiture order secured by the NPA set the total value of Maumela’s assets at R325 million and would allow for the sale of the assets to recoup funds lost by the department of health. The assets include upmarket properties in Gauteng, Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal, high-end vehicles, and artworks. The assets had not yet gone up for sale because the NPA were reportedly told shortly after the High Court decision that an appeal was in the pipeline. The NPA stated that it had received a recission application last week from Maumela’s legal representatives. “We were engaged by legal representatives for Maumela. They indicated an intention to appeal or to apply for a recission. “We will be expediting our response and any further processes to ensure that this application is concluded,” the NPA told the Sunday Times. A recission of judgement would seek to reverse or set aside the court order. ‘Escape accountibility’ Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi celebrated the High Court’s decision back in July. Kubayi said the forensic investigation and review of Tembisa Hospital’s basic accounting system was conducted by the Specialised Audit Services Unit of the National Treasury. “The investigation was initiated following information provided by the late Babita Deokaran, whose dedication to accountability came at a great personal cost. “This order demonstrates government’s commitment to ensuring that we deprive criminals of ill-gotten wealth, which in many cases is used to hide their crimes, escape accountability and fight against the state,” Kubayi stated.

Pirates’ Ouaddou praises Makgopa after scoring return
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou praised Evidence Makgopa after the striker made his first start of the season and grabbed a goal and an assist in the 4-0 Caf Champions League thumping of Namibia’s African Stars on Friday. Makgopa magic lifts Pirates Makgopa slotted in Pirates’ second goal on the stroke of half time and then laid on the third goal for Mpho Padime just after the break as Pirates cruised into the Champions League group stages with a 5-0 aggregate win. The 26-year old had previously made only two appearances for Pirates off the bench this season after returning from injury. “We gave Evidence his last full game last season, and we wanted to give him the opportunity today,” said Ouaddou. “And he took it, with his movement and with the way he took up space. I am happy, something I told him he has to improve is his movement between the lines. He allowed us to play (today) with his lay-offs. “He also scored which is very positive for me. It is an area I want efficiency. Now we have Radiopane, Mbuthuma, Pedersen, Luthuli (and Makgopa). “Everyone is scoring so it is good news for us. To get into the group stages allows me to rotate players. And we have one more player with Evidence.” For Ouaddou, reaching the group stages of the Champions League is already a step forward from last season, when the Buccaneer were knocked out in the final qualifier by FC St-Eloi Lupopo. Ouaddou – ‘Why not’? And the Moroccan believes Pirates can now go all the way and lift the trophy. “Now we have to be ambitious and try to go as far as we can. Maybe we can be able to (win it). Why not? You have to dream big. If you want to achieve something you cannot dream small. We will give everything and believe and dream, and why can we not bring the second star (Pirates won their only Champions League so far in 1995)? “If we work hard and are professional anything can happen.” Before that, Pirates will begin the defence of their Carling Black Label Knockout title on Tuesday, when they host Milford FC in the last 16 at the Orlando Amstel Arena. Top flight new boys Milford have made an impressive start to the season and currently sit fourth in the Betway Premiership table. Ouaddou’s Pirates, however, did beat them 2-0 at home in their opening Premiership game of the season, with Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi getting the goals. And they will be confident of doing so again, setting themselves up perfectly for Saturday’s Premiership Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

The Sunday, 25 October episode of Carte Blanche investigates a disturbing case involving a teenager allegedly obsessed with school shootings, a dark online network where violent fantasies were reportedly encouraged and shared, and a brutal attack on a six-year-old girl. The investigation explores how group chats, teenage relationships and disturbing fixations allegedly intersected in a hidden digital world where violence was glorified. It also raises critical questions about whether the attack could have been prevented if warning signs had been recognised and acted upon, examining the online interactions and concerning behaviour that may have preceded the shocking incident. Credibility among South African viewers Carte Blanche is a South African investigative journalism television series that airs on M-Net every Sunday at 19:00. Trump flirts with third-term bid despite constitutional ban
US President Donald Trump has once again flirted with the idea of seeking a third term in office, despite constitutional restrictions preventing him from doing so. The 80-year-old Republican is serving his second term as president and has recently raised the possibility of remaining in the White House beyond the constitutionally permitted limit. Speaking to rally-goers in Sioux City, Iowa, earlier this week, Trump admitted that he was unsure whether the law would allow him to run for president again. “I don’t know who is going to be your next president, and I think the law says I’m not 100% sure but I think the law says I’m not allowed to run again,” Trump said. The US Constitution’s 22nd Amendment prohibits anyone from being elected president more than twice. Trump won the 2016 presidential election before losing to Joe Biden in 2020. He returned to the White House after defeating Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. The US leader, however, continued to challenge the restrictions, claiming that alleged election fraud in 2020 gave him grounds to seek another term. “Well, the one thing is different: they cheated us on the second one because we won it three times. So I think I have the right to run again,” he said. “I think I have the right to run again because they cheated,” the president added. Trump eyeing third term in office Trump has repeatedly questioned the constitutional barrier to a third term, although the 22nd Amendment’s wording leaves little room for interpretation. While acknowledging the restrictions, he suggested that he had examined the relevant constitutional language and appeared frustrated by its clarity. “I’ve studied that phrase forever. Unfortunately, it’s quite concise. There’s not a lot of wiggle room,” Trump said as per The Guardian. Despite the constitutional obstacle, his latest remarks are likely to reignite debate over whether he could attempt to extend his presidency beyond his current term. Under the existing constitutional framework in the US, Trump cannot be elected president for a third time unless the Constitution is amended. Who will be the next American president?
