OPINION: From no fans to bad light … the Kingsmead Test has been a disappointment
It’s not only the fact there’s poor attendance at the ground. It’s also the fact it’s impossible to get a full day’s play in because of the bad light. Why did Kingsmead get to host the first Test between the Proteas and Australia? Few people on the east coast seem interested in the match and they’re not able to get close to 90 overs in during the day because of poor afternoon light. What’s gone down in Durban over the last few days raises many questions. Poor attendance The first, and most glaring one is, where are the fans? It’s taken us at The Citizen four days to write about this because we have been watching and waiting and hoping things would improve. We said Friday, day one of the Test, was a school day, and that it would be better over the weekend. Well, that made no difference … the stands and grass banks were as empty as they were on Friday. And on Monday it looked as bad as on any other day. In fact, it looked worse … just about completely empty. The big question is, why? Is it too hot and uncomfortable at Kingsmead? Is it too expensive? Or is there just no interest? What’s sad is players feed off the crowd, feel their energy … it’s what makes live sport so wonderful. It brings out the best in sports men and women, and in cricket especially, when the going gets tough it is often the crowd who lift a team and get them going again. But, not in Durban. The whole match has lacked a spark, an intensity, a vibe, a rhythm …because that comes from the fans; their signing, cheering, partying. Bad light Then, there is the issue of the light. It’s just not acceptable that so many overs are lost every day. If the fans are not a consideration, then why not start the day’s play earlier and ensure more overs get bowled? Or why not use the pink or orange ball and play under the stadium lights? Surely these things were discussed before the start of the Test. And the organisers were aware of the issues mentioned here? Durban, I’m sorry, you don’t deserve a Test cricket match again. Hopefully the fans turn out in their thousands in Gqeberha and Cape Town for the next two Tests.

Summertime hiking tips: Hiker rescued after cardiac-related emergency in Kloof Gorge
A hiker experienced a cardiac-related medical emergency deep within Kloof Gorge in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, prompting a challenging search and rescue operation amid humid conditions, according to Arrive Alive. On Sunday, the Mobi-Claw911 emergency control room was notified of the emergency. Fortunately, the patient was accompanied by friends who were specialist doctors and could provide assistance while rescue teams made their way to him. Rescue operation A first aider from Start Rescue undertook an intense 6km run to reach the patient; emergency services arrived, along with Gillitts Fire and Metro Police Search and Rescue. Search and Rescue South Africa (SARZA), the Arrive Alive national rescue partner, established a joint operations centre (JOC) near the trail entrance. The JOC coordinated the medical response, rescue teams, communications and the demanding extraction from the valley. Tips to hike in summer The rescue operation started at 11.30am and concluded at 5.19pm, when the patient was safely brought out with the combined assistance of the paramedic, rescue teams and his doctor friends. With the summer heat arriving, Mobi-Claw911 says hikes should be planned for cooler hours of the day. Adventurers should also carry enough drinking water and avoid strenuous activity in extreme heat. “If you feel unwell, postpone your hike. “If you have a known heart condition, speak to your doctor about suitable activity and precautions,” Mobi-Claw911 said. Hikers have been encouraged to hike with fellow hikers, to share routes and to inform their loved ones of their expected return time.

Kaizer Chiefs could end season empty-handed again
Kaizer Chiefs could end the season without silverware once again, with Amakhosi facing an uphill battle to compete for trophies on multiple fronts. Their last cup triumph came in the Nedbank Cup last year, ending a 10-year wait for silverware. However, the Soweto giants have struggled to build on that success this season. Chiefs have already been eliminated from the MTN8, dealing an early blow to their hopes of adding another trophy to their cabinet. They still have the Nedbank Cup and Carling Knockout to compete for, while they are also chasing continental glory in the CAF Confederation Cup. These competitions offer opportunities to salvage their campaign, but the challenge ahead is far from straightforward. Kaizer Chiefs falling behind in the league In the Betway Premiership, Amakhosi need to string together positive results if they are to have any realistic chance of challenging for the title. Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have set a high standard, and catching the two heavyweights could prove difficult. The challenge becomes even greater when considering the quality of their rivals. Should Chiefs progress deep into the domestic cup competitions, they could eventually have to overcome Sundowns or Pirates to lift silverware. Both sides have demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level, making them formidable obstacles in Chiefs’ pursuit of trophies. Amakhosi cannot afford to rely on favourable draws or hope that the leading contenders are eliminated early. They must improve their consistency and prove they can compete with the country’s strongest teams when it matters most. While Kaizer Chiefs still have opportunities to rescue their season, the prospect of another trophyless campaign cannot be ruled out. Unless they raise their level significantly, their hopes of ending the season with silverware could depend on a favourable turn of events in the remaining competitio Will Amakhosi win silverware?

Which are the best Kruger gates for reaching the popular camps?
Choosing the right entrance gate can make a big difference to a Kruger National Park trip. Kruger is huge, and entering through the wrong gate can add hours of driving inside the park before you reach your accommodation. SANParks has nine entrance gates, with different gates providing easier access to different parts of the park. The best one to use generally depends on which camp you’re staying at. Which Kruger gate should you use? Here are some of the most popular camps and the gates that give you the most direct access: Popular campRecommended gateApprox. travel timeSkukuzaPaul Kruger Gate20 minPretoriuskopNumbi Gate20 minBerg-en-DalMalelane Gate20 minCrocodile BridgeCrocodile Bridge GateAt the gateLower SabieCrocodile Bridge Gate1 hourSataraOrpen Gate1 hr 15 minTalamatiOrpen Gate1 hr 15 minLetabaPhalaborwa Gate1 hr 30 minOlifantsPhalaborwa Gate2 hoursPunda MariaPunda Maria Gate20 minShingwedziPunda Maria Gate1 hr 15 min These are SANParks’ approximate minimum travel times via the shortest route at legal speed limits. They don’t include stops for wildlife, traffic or other delays, so visitors should allow additional time. It’s also very easy to underestimate the distances inside Kruger. For example, Satara is only about 48km from Orpen Gate, but SANParks estimates the journey at around 1 hour 15 minutes. From Phalaborwa Gate, however, Satara is approximately 120km away and takes around five hours. Similarly, Skukuza is about 12km from Paul Kruger Gate, making it a much more convenient choice than entering through Phabeni, from where the journey is about 39km and roughly 1¾ hours. This can make a big difference on your arrival day, particularly if you’re travelling with children, have a late start or want to maximise your time on safari. The southern, central and northern gates The easiest way to think about Kruger’s gates is by region. Southern Kruger is served by gates including Malelane, Crocodile Bridge, Numbi, Paul Kruger and Phabeni. These are particularly useful for camps such as Berg-en-Dal, Lower Sabie, Skukuza and Pretoriuskop. Central Kruger is easiest to access through Orpen Gate, particularly if you’re staying at Satara or Talamati. For the northern section, Phalaborwa and Punda Maria are important access points. Phalaborwa provides relatively direct access to Letaba, Mopani and Olifants, while Punda Maria is particularly convenient for Punda Maria and Shingwedzi. Don’t just choose the closest gate to your starting point The closest gate geographically isn’t necessarily the best gate for your trip. If you’re driving from Johannesburg, for example, SANParks lists distances ranging from around 411km to Numbi Gate to about 600km to Pafuri Gate. The route you choose should therefore take into account both the journey from home and where your accommodation is inside the park. If you’re flying in, the same principle applies. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) is relatively convenient for the southern gates, while Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport provides access towards the central and northern areas. Phalaborwa also has the Kruger Park Gateway Airport, just 3km from Phalaborwa Gate.
