Nepal rescuers search for missing after flash flood
Nepali rescuers searched for five missing people on Monday, a day after devastating flash floods swept away more than 200 houses and five bridges along the Budhi Gandaki river. Videos showed a dark, debris-filled river surging through the hills in central Nepal’s Gorkha district. No deaths have been confirmed. On Sunday, 95 people including nine foreigners were rescued. “We are continuing our work on rescue and relief,” Raja Ram Basnet, Nepal Army spokesman told AFP, adding that four helicopters had been deployed. “We do not have any new information on the five missing,” he added. About 150 foreign trekkers are in the area, according to the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal, many on the popular Manaslu circuit trek. “We are working with authorities to rescue those who are stranded because of the roads,” the association’s president Sagar Pandey said. Authorities were also delivering aid to affected communities, with many residents fleeing their homes on Sunday morning as the torrent hit. The flood also struck hydropower plants, according to the national disaster agency. “I screamed out loud to get people out. Just a few minutes after people ran out the flood crashed through,” local resident Indra Bahadur Gurung said. “We have always lived here, and find it difficult to leave. I hope the government will manage something safe for us soon.” ‘Reducing future risks’ Preliminary data suggests that a landslide had dammed the river. It then burst, with the water surging downstream. “The government has already begun taking the necessary steps to restore normal life,” Prime Minister Balendra Shah said in a post on social media late Sunday. He urged residents to stay in safe locations and to avoid travel on risky roads and bridges. Nepal is still recovering from devastating floods on August 26, triggered by a mountain glacial collapse, which killed more than 1,400 people and left over 5,000 missing. Shah told the United Nations last month that the August flooding “was a warning to the world” about the rising dangers of climate change. Basanta Raj Adhikari, director at the Centre for Disaster Studies at Tribhuvan University, said that the latest flood showed the need for better monitoring. “The frequency of the disasters is dangerous… it shows we need to go beyond our traditional river-level based early warning systems,” Adhikari said, suggesting satellite images and seismometers could help detect events earlier. The Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development said Sunday that the floods highlighted the “range of hazards capable of generating destructive floods” in Himalayan river systems. “Understanding what triggered this flood will be critical for reducing future risks and strengthening resilience,” the centre’s director general Pema Gyamtsho said in the statement. Heavy rainfall in late September also triggered floods and landslides, killing at least 21 people, according to the disaster agency.

Errol Flynn is topping the bill
Exciting prospect Errol Flynn has been installed as the early bookmakers’ favourite for the 2026 Betway Summer Cup to be run at Joburg’s Turffontein racecourse on 28 November for a stake of R6-million. The race sponsor has the Joey Soma-trained four-year-old gelding on offer at 8.00 – seven weeks out from the bell for the Highveld’s historic horse race. A wide-open market opened up when 43 first entries for the Grade 1 contest over 2000m were unveiled. The Summer Cup has thrown up a number of shock winners in the past decade, so gun-shy punters understandably will be a bit wary of the ante-post market enthusiasm usually associated with big, glamorous races. Last year’s 100-1 upset by Mocha Blend is still very fresh in the memory, while hefty blows inflicted by Atticus Finch (20-1, 2024), Royal Victory (30-1, 2023), Flying Carpet (25-1, 2021) and Zillzal (28-1, 2019) left long-lasting bruises. Two dozen horses are sandwiched between 11.00 and 26.00 on Betway’s board this week. This type of odds pattern offers brave backers tempting prices on a host of smart horses. The likes of Grand Empire and Gladatorian, both recent winners of big races at the Big T, will turn a few heads at 17.00. What about last year’s Summer Cup runner-up Olivia’s Way, another local hero, at 26.00? And the names Choisaanada, Magic Verse, Tintin and Fire Attack at crazy long odds will probably see the betting picture change rapidly as early speculative money flows in. Errol Flynn was marked down as a likely future champion when he won five of six starts over the first seven months of this year, including the final two legs of the Highveld Winter Series. His last effort, in early July, was particularly impressive as he sauntered past decent opposition in the Grade 3 Sea Cottage Stakes at Turffontein, with both trainer Soma and jockey Keagan de Melo gushing about the youngster’s quality and potential. An interesting entry is British-bred Calla Lagoon from the Stuart Pettigrew stable. This five-year-old entire is one of a posse of well-pedigreed horses being imported by businessman and horse owner Willem Ackerman as he strives to build an influential thoroughbred stud in Gauteng. Calla Lagoon has won two of his three starts in South Africa, a Pinnacle Stakes over a mile being the peak achievement so far. He could be something special and will be closely watched in the coming days as he bids to qualify for inclusion in the Summer Cup. Betway betting: 8.00 Errol Flynn (Soma)11.00 Mocha Blend (Robinson)13.00 King Pelles (Van Zyl), The Ultimate King (Peter)15.00 Calla Lagoon (Pettigrew)16.00 Native Ruler (Snaith)17.00 Grand Empire (Tarry), Gladatorian (Ferrie), Holding Thumbs (G Kotzen), Immediate Edge (De Kock), Jan Van Goyen (De Kock), Isivivane (Muscutt), Littlemissmillion (Zackey)21.00 Magic Verse (Snaith), Reet Petite (De Kock), Otto Luyken (Crawford)26.00 Busstopinhounslow (Maroun), Choisaanada (Verdonese), Chronicle King (Dawson), Drumnadrochit (De Kock), Field Marshall (N Kotzen), Madison Valley (N Kotzen), Tomyris (Peter), Solar Sail (Matchett), Olivia’s Way (Magner)29.00 Tintin (Tarry)34.00 to 70.00 the others.

Shadrack Sibiya quits SAPS in ‘dishonourable discharge’
Shadrack Sibiya is no longer a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS). He didn’t wait for the outcome of his disciplinary hearing. Instead, his lawyer handed in his resignation just after it began. The former deputy national police commissioner resigned on Monday, 12 October 2026. SAPS has classified his exit as a dishonourable discharge. WHAT THE SAPS STATEMENT SAYS SAPS confirmed in a statement that Sibiya was no longer an employee of the service, with effect from 12 October. “The disciplinary hearing against Lieutenant-General Sibiya sat this morning, during which his legal representative tendered his resignation immediately after the disciplinary proceedings had commenced,” the statement reads. “As the former senior officer had an ongoing disciplinary case against him at the time of his resignation, his departure from the Service is therefore regarded as a dishonourable discharge,” the statement continued. WHAT SIBIYA WAS FACING The disciplinary case stemmed from allegations raised at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The commission is investigating alleged criminal infiltration and political interference in the criminal justice system. The disciplinary process relates to allegations that he shared confidential police information and improperly handled investigations. At the commission, Sibiya was also accused of receiving R500,000 from a businessman at SAPS headquarters in Pretoria in January 2024, and a further R300,000 at his home in September 2024. Sibiya has denied all the allegations against him. A SEPARATE CRIMINAL CASE Sibiya’s resignation doesn’t affect the criminal case against him. He is currently facing charges including rape, human trafficking and child sexual grooming at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court SHOULD OFFICERS WHO RESIGN DURING DISCIPLINARY HEARINGS STILL FACE CONSEQUENCES? Welkom teacher MISSING after chilling call to wife, car recovered
Police are searching for a 55-year-old Free State teacher who disappeared under mysterious circumstances more than a week ago, with his abandoned vehicle offering few clues about his whereabouts. Gert Adams, an educator from Welkom, was last heard from on Sunday, 4 October, when he contacted his wife shortly before his disappearance. Free State police spokesperson Sergeant Palesa Thabana said Adams was allegedly forcibly taken by unknown suspects at approximately 23:30. “The victim contacted his wife telephonically before the call was abruptly ended. He was then reported as missing,” Thabana said. Police have since opened an investigation into alleged carjacking and kidnapping. Missing teacher’s car found abandoned Two days after Adams disappeared, police recovered his grey Hyundai iX35 in the Klippan area of Welkom. The vehicle was unoccupied, but investigators found his cellphone and other belongings inside. Despite the discovery, Adams remains missing. “The whereabouts of the 55-year-old male victim are still unknown and police investigations are ongoing. The motive for the kidnapping remains unclear at this stage,” Thabana said. The Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. Police have not confirmed whether any ransom demand has been made or identified possible suspects. Police appeal for information Investigators are appealing to residents who may have witnessed suspicious activity or have information about Adams’s disappearance to assist. “The search for the victim and the possible suspects is part of ongoing investigations,” Thabana said. Anyone with information can contact Detective Sergeant Tsie Matlokotsi of the Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes unit on 078 758 5658. Alternatively, members of the public can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit an anonymous tip-off through the MySAPS app. Police have assured the public that all information will be treated confidentially.
