Kleinmond Beach tragedy: Nine-year-old boy drowns despite massive rescue effort
A pleasant day at the beach ended in tragedy when a nine-year-old boy drowned at Kleinmond Main Beach Lagoon, despite desperate efforts by bystanders, medics and emergency responders to save his life. The tragic incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon when emergency services were alerted to reports of a child in distress in the water. Rescue Witnesses rushed to help and pulled the boy from the lagoon before immediately beginning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a frantic bid to save him. Schalk Boonzaaier, station commander of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in Kleinmond, said rescue crews were activated shortly after 3pm following reports of a drowning in progress. “On arrival on the scene, we found bystander Good Samaritans were in the process of recovering a child from the water, and CPR efforts were commenced by bystanders, including a clinical practitioner, on the local nine-year-old male who had been discovered underwater in the lagoon,” Boonzaaier said. Beach visit The child had been visiting the beach with family members when the incident occurred. Members of the NSRI, ambulance services, firefighters and police all responded to the emergency, with rescue medics continuing resuscitation efforts alongside paramedics. “NSRI medics continued with CPR efforts and were joined on the scene by paramedics,” Boonzaaier said. “Despite extensive CPR efforts, after all efforts to resuscitate the child were exhausted, the child was sadly declared deceased by paramedics,” he said. The child’s body was later handed over to police and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Service for further investigation. Police investigations Police have opened an inquest docket to determine the circumstances surrounding the drowning. Boonzaaier conveyed condolences to the grieving family, who are being supported by police following the devastating loss. “Our deepest condolences are conveyed to the family and loved ones of the deceased child during this difficult time,” he said.

Suspect found with property of murdered jogger Elizabeth ‘Tsontso’ Moselakgomo
The South African Police Service (Saps) has arrested a suspect in connection with the murder case of 38-year-old runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo after officers found the individual allegedly in possession of an item belonging to her. The suspect will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court today. Authorities expect to charge the individual with possession of stolen property while investigative teams continue to probe the wider circumstances surrounding Moselakgomo’s tragic death. Moselakgomo disappeared on 12 September after leaving her home in Rhodesfield, Kempton Park, for an afternoon jog. Searchers later discovered her body, an atrocity that sparked national outrage and renewed passionate calls for improved safety measures for women across South Africa. “The suspect is likely to face a charge of being in possession of stolen property. At this stage, no murder charge has been brought against the suspect. Investigations are ongoing,” said Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. This is a developing story.

PSL returns: When do Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs play on Tuesday?
The PSL returns with a four-match slate on Tuesday night at venues across the country. All 4 teams at the top of the Premier Soccer League table will be in action. Here’s the latest on the concurrent Premiership fixtures, all kicking off at 19:30. Durban City vs AmaZulu FC 10th-placed Durban City welcome 3rd-placed AmaZulu to the Chatsworth Stadium. Usuthu have been strong as Arthur Zwane continues to steer them straight. City, meanwhile, have struggled for consistent results and need wins to move away from teams in the relegation zone. A win away for AmaZulu as the PSL returns will keep them in the battle at the top of the table. Kaizer Chiefs vs Stellenbosch FC 4th-placed Kaizer Chiefs have the home advantage against Stellenbosch at the FNB Stadium. Stellies are currently 7th with 2 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss so far. The Amakhosi will be keen to add another win, having slipped up and allowing AmaZulu to move ahead. The PSL table remains tightly packed, so a positive result will be crucial for Fernando da Cruz and co. Another #BetwayPrem weekend in the books ✅Here is how the standings look ahead of the International Break 📊 pic.twitter.com/X8daMZq3yY— Official PSL (@OfficialPSL) September 21, 2026 Richards Bay vs Mamelodi Sundowns Relegation-threatened Richards Bay welcome a massive guest to the Princess Magogo Stadium. Mamelodi Sundowns, top of the PSL table, are fresh off their MTN8 final victory over Orlando Pirates. It’s the ultimate test for new Richards Bay coach Dimitar Pantev. He will need to pull off the impossible against a Sundowns team that passed its depth test with flying colours. Orlando Pirates vs TS Galaxy Will Orlando Pirates bounce back, or has the MTN8 final loss taken the wind out of their sails? This question will be answered at the Orlando Stadium against the lowly TS Galaxy. The Buccaneers are trailing Sundowns by 1 point with a game in hand, but momentum may not be on their side. For the Rockets, anything less than a win could open the door for another drop down the log. All fixtures are correct according to the PSL website. Kempton Park runner’s murder: What we know about the arrest
Police have confirmed the arrest of a suspect found in possession of an item belonging to murdered Kempton Park runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo. The confirmation comes amid reports that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the 38-year-old’s murder. However, in a statement issued on Monday, 12 October, national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed only one arrest. The suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a possible charge of possession of stolen property. “At this stage, no murder charge has been brought against the suspect. Investigations are ongoing,” Mathe said. ELIZABETH MOSELAKGOMO’S FINAL RUN Moselakgomo, 38, disappeared on 9 September after leaving her Rhodesfield home for her usual afternoon run. Her eight-year-old daughter, Khumo, raised the alarm when her mother failed to return at her expected time. Police discovered Moselakgomo’s body in Rhodesfield on 12 September. Her family formally identified her at the Germiston mortuary two days later. DAUGHTER’S HEARTBREAKING FAREWELL Moselakgomo was laid to rest in Phake, Mpumalanga, on 20 September. As previously reported, Khumo delivered an emotional poem at her mother’s funeral, describing the pain of losing her and the memories she would carry with her. The running community also rallied behind the child, establishing an education fund that had raised more than R230 000 by 21 September. POLICE PREVIOUSLY PROMISED ARRESTS On 21 September, Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili said investigators were making progress in the wider Ekurhuleni murder investigations. “We are hopeful that we are getting closer to the truth,” Mosikili said at the time. She stressed that police would not rush arrests without sufficient evidence to support criminal charges.
