Warning: Rand Water calls on customers to reduce consumption as crisis looms
Rand Water has warned of a looming crisis as several customers’ water consumption has reached exceptionally high levels, putting the supply system under increasing pressure. The water utility has called on all municipal customers to reduce their water consumption to stabilise the system. Reduce your water consumption, customers – Rand Water Rand Water said on Wednesday that although it is pumping at maximum capacity, water demand continues to rise and consumption has reached record levels. Source: Rand Water “Sustained overconsumption is making it increasingly difficult to balance supply across the network and heightens the risk of disruptions unless demand is brought under control,” the utility said. Rand Water said it has repeatedly warned municipalities about high consumption. The utility said its engagements with municipalities have focused on coordinating mitigation strategies and finding new ways to improve the water supply system. “Despite these efforts, persistent high consumption in certain areas continues to undermine the sustainable balance of supply across the network,” the water utility said. High consumption undermines sustainable balance “Rand Water therefore calls on all over-consuming municipal customers to reduce consumption in line with their allocated volumes.” The utility said reducing consumption immediately is essential to prevent system failure and ensure supply continues. It said it would also take appropriate steps to protect the system and limit water supply to overconsuming customers. “Rand Water is duty-bound to protect the bulk supply system and will not hesitate to take appropriate action where necessary. Water conservation is a shared responsibility,” Rand Water said. “Municipalities, residents and businesses are urged to use water responsibly to help ensure a sustainable and equitable supply for all.”

South Africa v Australia second Test: Day three highlights
When stumps were drawn on day three, Australia had reached 3/1, trailing South Africa by 422 runs in their first innings of the second Test in Gqeberha on Tuesday. Travis Head was on one not out and night watchman Scott Boland was unbeaten on two. Bavuma digs deep Resuming their first innings at 97/5 in the morning session, following multiple rain delays over the first two days, the Proteas launched a recovery anchored by captain Temba Bavuma. The skipper was spectacular, contributing 179 runs off 334 balls after spending more than nine hours at the crease overnight, as he put his team in control. It was a career-best knock for Bavuma, who hit his fifth Test century and bettered his previous high score of 172. Bavuma has become a rock for the national Test side over the last couple of years, leading from the front, and he proved once again that the Proteas can rely on him when they really need him. Lower-order support While Bavuma was fighting to keep the hosts in the hunt, he didn’t receive much support from the specialist batters in the side, and they were struggling at 110/6 when all-rounder Marco Jansen stepped to the crease. Jansen played a crucial support role, hitting 85 runs off 100 deliveries for his fifth Test half-century as he combined with his captain to put pressure on the tourists. He was eventually removed shortly after Australia took the new ball in the second session, when Scott Boland had him caught by Travis Head at short midwicket, but Jansen had done enough to help resurrect the Proteas’ innings. After he was dismissed, spin bowler Simon Harmer also stepped up with a memorable knock, making 82 off 157 as he compiled his first five-day half-century. The 183-run partnership between Harmer and Bavuma was a Test record for the highest stand by a Proteas pairing for the eighth wicket. Boland strikes for Australia Though the majority of the touring team’s bowlers struggled to take wickets, seamer Scott Boland was at his best. Aside from taking a key wicket to end the 132-run seventh-wicket partnership between Jansen and Bavuma, he spearheaded Australia’s attack by securing 5/81 – his third five-wicket haul in the Test format. He didn’t do all the work, however, with paceman Mitchell Starc taking 3/89 and spinner Beau Webster (0/43) holding up an end, delivering six maiden overs and keeping his economy rate to 2.26 from the 19 overs he bowled in South Africa’s first innings. Delayed declaration The Proteas might have waited a little longer than they should have before declaring their first innings at 425/9 when Bavuma was removed shortly before the close of play. But their bowlers backed the skipper in style, with speedster Kagiso Rabada removing opener Nic Maddinson with the fourth ball of Australia’s innings (and his fourth delivery since returning from a hamstring injury) to place the Baggy Greens under serious pressure overnight. South Africa will emerge from the changerooms on Wednesday with a great deal of confidence that they can level the series.

‘Dream come true’: Handre Pollard’s daughter turns one!
Marise Pollard, the wife of Springboks fly-half Handre Pollard, penned a thoughtful tribute to their daughter Isabella who turned one on 20 October. HANDRE POLLARD’S DAUGHTER TURNS ONE Handre and Marise Pollard have been together for over 13 years and married for over eight years. Marise and Handre Pollard officially became parents of two under two on 20 October 2025. On 25 April 2024, the pair welcomed their first child, Hunter Andre Pollard. Now, they are celebrating their daughter, Isabella Pollard turning one. Marise penned a touching tribute to her toddler via an Instagram post. Take a look… “Can’t write a caption because I’ve cried too many times—like, HOW is she ONE? Just five minutes ago, you were still just a dream. The fastest year of parenthood yet. Happy birthday, Isabella—our Bella. You are wild, gentle, loving, and a literal ray of sunshine. With your dad’s green eyes, you run through life with the biggest smile,” she wrote. “I could watch you all day long. I see so much of myself in you; you teach me so much. I don’t know what I did to be your mom in this lifetime, but I’m the luckiest—thank you, Jesus. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it. My best friend forever, my dream come true,” she continued. “You are everything 🤍,” she added. MARISE POLLARD ON IVF Marise previously opened up about using In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). She explained that she planned everything she could for her first child, Hunter. However, with Isabella, she learnt that there was no need for perfection and embraced the chaos. “We planned everything to a tee. After IVF, I spent months mentally, emotionally, and spiritually preparing myself. I was determined to be organised, prepared, and on top of everything. I thought if I planned enough, motherhood would unfold exactly as I imagined,” she wrote. “Then came Isabella…And she gently taught me one of the biggest lessons, you cannot control motherhood. She arrived and slowly chipped away at my need for perfection. The schedules, the expectations, the pressure to have it all together. She showed me that the magic isn’t found in getting everything right, it’s found in embracing the chaos, being present in the messy moments, and sometimes simply laughing when nothing goes according to plan,” she continued. The family of four recently went on holiday to Mauritius.

Makhaya Ntini reveals how Proteas wanted him sent home before 13-wicket haul
Former Proteas fast bowler Makhaya Ntini has revealed how he was blamed for South Africa’s disappointing performance in the first Test against the West Indies in 2005, only to bounce back with a remarkable 13-wicket haul in the next match. The first Test, played in Guyana, saw the West Indies post a mammoth 543/5. South Africa struggled in their first innings, managing just 188 runs before being forced to follow on. The Proteas then scored 269 in their second innings to secure a draw. Speaking to Sen Cricket, Ntini recalled how he was singled out for criticism after South Africa managed to take only three wickets in the match. Makhaya Ntini says he was made the scapegoat The former fast bowler said he was even told that he did not belong in the team and should be sent home, despite the other bowlers also struggling to make an impact. “I was called the weakest link. My question was, what do you mean I was the weakest link? It seems like I was the only one who was supposed to bowl here, but you selected six bowlers,” Ntini said. “None of us took more than one wicket, but I was made the weakest link.” Ntini revealed that he accepted the criticism but remained in the team for the second Test, which was played in Trinidad. Rather than being sent home, the bowler delivered one of the finest performances of his career, claiming 13 wickets to help South Africa beat the West Indies in the next Test match. It was one of Makhaya Ntini’s best bowling figures in Test cricket. “They said, ‘No, no, no, you don’t belong here, you need to go home.’ Okay, fair enough, I took it, but I didn’t go home. They made a mistake of selecting me for the next game that was played in Trinidad. I picked up 13 wickets in that game,” he recalled. “I was like, what’s the story here? Am I still getting sent home?” Ntini added with a laugh. Asked whether the performance ranked among the best he had ever produced, alongside his memorable display at Lord’s, Ntini agreed. “Yes, it was, besides Lord’s,” he said. Makhaya Ntini’s account highlights the remarkable turnaround between the two Tests, as the bowler responded to being labelled the team’s weakest link by producing a match-winning performance for the Proteas. South Africa went on to win the four-Test series 2-0 How good was Ntini in his prime?
