Ramaphosa to meet Silicon Valley AI giants as South Africa eyes tech future
As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly reshapes economies, workplaces, and communication worldwide, President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa is positioning itself to better understand the technology and its impact. Speaking at the Black Wednesday commemoration lunch on Monday, Ramaphosa said he plans to lead a delegation of government representatives, academics, business leaders, and young South Africans to Silicon Valley after the local government elections. Silicon Valley The delegation is expected to engage with leading technology companies and AI developers as South Africa seeks to understand how the technology can be used to support growth, innovation and development. “After the elections, I will be leading a group of people from government, from universities, young people and all, and business, and will take along some of my comrades as well to Silicon Valley, just to go and meet those big moguls of artificial intelligence, to get to understand exactly how it functions and how we can utilise it to our own benefit,” Ramaphosa said. Many South African tech moguls have South African roots, including billionaire owner of SpaceX and Tesla Elon Musk, co-chair of US President Donald Trump’s science and technology advisory council David Sacks, and venture capitalist Peter Thiel. Artificial Intelligence The president said countries worldwide are grappling with AI’s rapid advancement and its growing influence on society, the economy and public life. According to Ramaphosa, the technology presents significant opportunities for South Africa, particularly in sectors that rely on information processing, research and communication. He said AI could help journalists analyse large volumes of information, identify trends, translate content and improve access to information. These capabilities, he noted, could be particularly valuable in South Africa’s multilingual environment. Disinformation While highlighting the benefits of AI, Ramaphosa also raised concerns about the risks associated with the technology, particularly the spread of false or manipulated content. He warned that AI-generated images, recordings, and videos are becoming increasingly convincing and can shape public perceptions before people verify information. Ramaphosa referred to a manipulated image that circulated on social media depicting him and Deputy President Paul Mashatile lying in a hospital ward. “And they put us in a hospital ward, lying next to each other, and many people believed it, and many concluded there is no leadership in South Africa,” he said. The President said the incident illustrated how quickly false information can spread online. “A fabricated reporting, a recording rather, can spread across social media before journalists have had an opportunity to check it and establish it as truth,” he said. Elections With South Africans set to vote in the local government elections on 4 November, Ramaphosa cautioned that AI-generated disinformation could affect public discourse and confidence in democratic processes. He said the growing sophistication of AI makes accurate and credible journalism increasingly important. “Technology may change how information is produced and distributed, but it does not diminish the importance of truth, of accuracy, fairness and accountability,” he said. With the country’s sixth local government elections less than a month away, TikTok unveiled measures to protect election integrity and help users access reliable information. Central to the initiative is the launch of an in-app Election Centre, developed in partnership with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC). Media Freedom Ramaphosa also used the occasion to condemn intimidation and harassment directed at journalists. He said journalists should be able to perform their duties without fear, particularly as many continue to face threats and abuse online. “No journalist should ever have to fear for their safety because they are doing their job,” he said. The planned Silicon Valley visit comes as South Africa seeks to better understand the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence, while exploring ways to ensure the technology contributes to economic growth, innovation and access to information.

Hawks nab attorney over alleged R3.2 million RAF payout scam
The Hawks have arrested a 51-year-old Eastern Cape attorney for allegedly pocketing more than R3.2 million in Road Accident Fund (RAF) compensation intended for clients, after a complainant reportedly discovered that money she had been told was still pending had actually been paid years earlier. Members of the KuGompo Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) arrested Vuyisile Magqabi on Monday, who made a brief appearance in the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court the same day. He faces a theft charge related to RAF compensation allegedly entrusted to his law firm for its clients’ benefit. Compensation claim According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, the case stems from a compensation claim lodged through Magqabi Attorneys following a motor vehicle accident involving a complainant and her daughter on the N2 between Makhanda and Peddie. “The RAF processed the claim and paid the compensation into the law firm’s trust account between 2020 and 2022,” Mhlakuvana said. Despite the payment, the complainant reportedly continued to enquire about the status of the claim and was allegedly told by the attorney that the matter was still under consideration. Concern Growing concerned by the delay, the complainant later approached the RAF directly to establish the status of the compensation claim. “During this enquiry, she allegedly discovered that payment had already been made into the law firm’s trust account in 2022,” said Mhlakuvana. The discovery triggered further enquiries and the matter was subsequently referred to the Hawks for criminal investigation. Investigation Mhlakuvana said a thorough Hawks investigation allegedly established that an amount exceeding R3.2 million was paid into the law firm’s trust account in connection with the compensation claim. According to the investigation, the complainants allegedly received only about R1.4 million of the compensation, while the remainder was allegedly misappropriated. “Further investigative findings reportedly revealed that the complainants received only approximately R1.4 million, while the remaining amount was allegedly misappropriated for the benefit of the accused,” Mhlakuvana said. Bail Following the investigation, Magqabi was arrested and charged with theft. The attorney was granted bail of R10,000, and the case was postponed to 10 November 2026 for transfer to the KuGompo Commercial Crimes Court.

CAS reveals date to rule on legitimate AFCON 2025 winners
Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has revealed a date to rule on who the legitimate winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). In January 2026, Senegal were crowned AFCON champions after beating Morocco 1-0 in a final filled with controversies. On the night, a number of Senegal players walked out of the pitch in protest for a dubious penalty which was awarded to Morocco. They then returned to pitch after the game had stopped for almost 15 minutes, and Edouard Andy denied Brahim Diaz from the spot. Pape Gueye then scored the winner for Senegal, much to the delight of many African football fans. Morocco lost the game but they later protested the result with CAF who ruled in their favour, and Senegal appealed the ruling with CAS. Now, in a statement released on Monday, CAS revealed that its panel has begun its work and continues to deliberate on the matter. CAS said the final ruling on who the legitimate AFCON 2025 winners will be released at the end of November 2026. CAS TO DETERMINE LEGITIMATE AFCON 2025 WINNERS IN NOVEMBER “This is a procedural update regarding the decision for the appeal by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF, in French) against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF, in French),” reads the statement. “The hearing took place behind closed doors at CAS headquarters, in Lausanne, on Thursday 8 October 2026.” “The Panel have begun and continue their deliberations.” “The CAS arbitrators have decided to issue a complete ruling which includes legal grounds, known as a CAS Award. This process will require several weeks, with the CAS Award expected at the end of November 2026.” “Only information provided through CAS channels is considered official and any announcement concerning this case will be published on the CAS website,” concluded the statement. Jerry Sikhosana feels sidelined and neglected by Orlando Pirates
Legendary striker Jerry Sikhosana has expressed his frustrations at how his former club Orlando Pirates treat him. Sikhosana cemented his legendary status in the mid-1990s, and helped Pirates win the CAF Champions League in 1995. The now 57-year-old scored the only goal of the game in the second leg of that final against ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan. Sikhosana was signed by Pirates from Witbank Aces in 1993, and he left the Soweto giants in 1998. However, he returned for a second stint between 2000 and 2001. At the time he left, Sikhosana had scored 44 goals in 125 official games for the Sea Robbers, and he’s never been part of the club’s setup in any capacity. Now, speaking on Chillers Punch podcast, Sikhosana expressed how painful it has been for him to not even be treated as a legend he is by Pirates. He recalled how he once had to queue for a match ticket with the rest of the fans, and also being given a VIP ticket by Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director Jessica Motaung. JERRY SIKHOSANA FEELS UNWANTED BY ORLANDO PIRATES “You look at the Pirates jersey with a star, and the first impression should be, ‘thank you Jerry Sikhosana, you gave us a star’,” said Sikhosana. “But you’d go to the stadium, fold my arms and queue with the supporters to go and buy a match ticket. I swear to God that’s what is happening. “I was once in Durban with Brian (Baloyi). We moved to a suite, I bumped into Thandi (Merafe), and she looked down. “I then saw Eddie (Edward Motale) and Lucky (Lekgwathi), and they wearing these new Pirates tracksuits, and you could see that these are the two legends that were picked for that game. “And they were like, ‘and what about the uniform?’, and asked them ‘what uniform? I’m not a Pirates legend. I’m just wearing my clothes’. “Chiefs legends wore their own uniform. I wouldn’t wear the Pirates merchandise. All I wanted there was to ask for a ticket as a Pirates legend but I was deprived and Chiefs gave me.” WATCH THE SNIPPET OF THE INTERVIEW BELOW… Jerry Skosana says he’s sidelined at Orlando Pirates as a legend. pic.twitter.com/ffffgVHXUQ— Meshack Bevhula (@MeshackBevhulas) October 19, 2026
