‘We’ll make space for your children’: Nomvula Mokonyane on illegal foreigners ‘getting RDPs’
The ANC has promised to remove undocumented foreign nationals from government-funded houses in Barberton, Mpumalanga. First deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane made the pledge on Sunday while campaigning door-to-door, ahead of the 4 November municipal elections. The ANC has been working to keep control of municipalities in Mpumalanga. As voters prepare for elections in less than a month, political parties are competing for the same supporters. During her walkabout, Mokonyane raised several issues, including urging residents to protect women and children. To convince supporters of what the ANC has done in the municipalities it governs, she claimed the party’s councils had made progress on water. Residents in Barberton have been plagued by water issues, including outages from illegal mining and safety alerts about nearby dams such as the Senteeko Dam, also referred to as “My Own Dam”, which has been at risk of wall collapse. Residents complain about land and housing Mokonyane discussed illegal immigration with a resident. She told the woman what the president, Cyril Ramaphosa, expected from councils. “Ramaphosa said municipalities must work with the national government to ensure that foreign nationals do not arrive here illegally,” Mokonyane told the resident. The resident responded by blaming South Africans in government for giving land to illegal foreigners. She also said the area was overcrowded with foreigners. “Our children have passed on not receiving any land even after they registered, but the foreign nationals are now extending [their houses],” the resident complained. Mokonyane says handing over houses is illegal Mokonyane acknowledged what the woman was saying and stated that it was illegal for foreign nationals to be sold or given government housing like RDPs. The ANC deputy SG promised that the ANC would take action against the illegal migration issue. “We will call meetings, and when we see them, we will work together with the community and chase them out of the houses to make space for your children,” she said. Furthermore, speaking to Newzroom Afrika, she said South Africans who gave houses to undocumented foreigners should also be found and told they were breaking the law. “The law doesn’t allow that.” She said that the complaints showed voters agreed with the ANC. “It’s so good because it shows that our position resonates very well with the views of South Africans”. Bylaws, crime and border control According to Mokonyane, bylaws also needed to be enforced against South Africans who helped undocumented people. She told shop owners not to rent their premises to foreign nationals. “If you run your spaza shop or your old family shop, don’t rent it out to a non-South African,” said Mokonyane. She said drug dealers used houses owned by South Africans, and urged citizens to resist being “coerced into doing wrong things”. Furthermore, Mokonyane placed responsibility for border security on government. “Let government manage the borders, manage the entry points, and deal with the internal problems that are there within every institution that has to deal with the movement of illegal foreigners,” said Mokonyane. Watch: Mokonyane door-to-door campaign for the ANC ahead of local elections [WATCH] The ANC is pulling out all the stops to retain control of municipalities in Mpumalanga. The party’s first deputy secretary-general, Nomvula Mokonyane, is leading a campaign in Barberton today, where she attended a church service and is embarking on a door-to-door campaign. From ‘You Whites’ rant to US refugee: SA Indian man sparks backlash
Merlin Jankeepersad, an Indian South African man whose racist rant against white people went viral on Facebook a few years ago, has taken up refugee status in the US His acceptance into the programme, which is open to minority races, particularly white Afrikaner farmers, has sparked backlash, given the increase in rejected applications INDIAN MAN BECOMES US REFUGEE YEARS AFTER RACIST FACEBOOK RANT Earlier this year, Merlin Jankeepersad moved to the US under the refugee programme. The former South African property agent – of Indian descent – has resettled in the community of Rock Island, Illinois. Although he is eligible for the programme, as a racial minority, a racially-charged Facebook post from 2018 has come back to haunt him. At the time, Jankeepersad posted on his account: “What the f**k is wrong with you c*nt whites. In a country where you are about to be evicted? I just arrived at Olivedale Spar, a stupid wh*re decided to leave her trolley as I pulled into a parking space, and her p*ss boyfriend tried to drive me over. I hooted and booted his driver’s side window with my bare hands, and like a usual p*ssy, he ran away. You whites must f**king get a wake-up” After the post blew up on social media, Jankeepersad apologised to the public, particularly white people. At the time, Property24 distanced itself from the man, stating that his agent profile had been removed from their website. His recent acceptance into the refugee programme, where the majority of applicants are white Afrikaner people, has sparked backlash on social media. X user @GriffinForGold tagged US State Secretary Marco Rubio, tweeting: “The refugee program is being abused. This is a serious threat to the American people, and it undermines the programme. This should be investigated, and perpetrators should be arrested and deported immediately back to South Africa. Please investigate” Another account, @MustLoveDogs32, posted: “So America can allow these types of people in but not the Afrikaners who were rejected? Perhaps his application needs to be revisited”. A third, @Sojournerism, commented: “I demand to know why my daughter was found ineligible and weigh it against this man’s approval. 😡” PARTYING WITH NEW FRIENDS Amid the backlash, Merlin Jankeepersad has made his social media accounts private. However, recent posts in various Facebook groups reveal that the South African man is settling in well to his adopted country. He posted last month: “I’ve recently moved to the Quad Cities, Live in Rock Island and work in Davenport. What do other single people in their 40s do around here for fun, socialising, meeting and making new friends, etc? Any good bars or dance clubs? He also shared that he had been accepted into a robotics course at a local community college, was working night shifts for Amazon, and had been baptised at his Anglican church. HOW WAS HE ACCEPTED INTO RESETTLEMENT PROGRAMME? Like other racial minorities in the refugee programme, Merlin Jankeeersad had to prove his “fear of persecution” in his application. This could be anything from race-based discrimination, threats or violence made against him, discrimination against his political opinion or demonstrating a fear of future persecution.

Orlando Pirates midweek fixture confirmed after MTN8 heartbreak
Following their MTN8 final defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates will be eager to dust themselves off and get back to winning ways. The Buccaneers have little time to dwell on their disappointment as they prepare to face TS Galaxy in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday evening. A victory could see Pirates move above Sundowns at the top of the league standings, providing some consolation after missing out on another MTN8 title. After seven league matches, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men have won six and drawn once, underlining their impressive start to the campaign. However, their challenge will be to ensure that Saturday’s defeat does not affect their confidence and momentum in the league. TS Galaxy could capitalise if the Soweto giants struggle to put their MTN8 heartbreak behind them. The Rockets will be hoping to make life difficult for Pirates as they look to return to domestic action with a positive result. When Do Orlando Pirates Play TS Galaxy? Pirates host TS Galaxy on Tuesday evening at the Orlando Amstel Arena. The Buccaneers have enjoyed success against the Rockets in recent meetings, including an emphatic 5-0 victory at the Mbombela Stadium earlier this year. With only three days between the MTN8 final and their next league fixture, changes to the Orlando Pirates starting XI could be expected. The likes of Mohau Nkota and Thalente Mbatha could be in contention for their first starts of the season after recently recovering from injuries. Ouaddou will also have to manage his squad carefully, with Pirates set to turn their attention to the CAF Champions League preliminary round next weekend. The clash against Galaxy therefore presents an opportunity for the Buccaneers to respond immediately to their cup disappointment while maintaining their strong start to the league campaign. Will the Buccaneers bounce back?
