Moremi earns Pirates crucial away win as Chiefs suffer defeat
Orlando Pirates secured a crucial 1-0 away win against Namibian champions African Stars in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second-round qualifier. Tshepang Moremi scored the only goal in the second half at the Botswana National Stadium, giving Pirates an advantage in the two-legged tie. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made two changes to the team that handed TS Galaxy a 3-0 drubbing midweek, with Thalente Mbatha coming in for Thapelo Mokobodi in central midfield. Yanela Mbuthuma also made a return up front in place of Boitumelo Radiopane, who did not even make the matchday squad. The Buccaneers started the game on the front foot and found themselves near the edge of the Stars box as early as the fourth minute. Ghampani Lungu created space for himself wide on the flank, but his cross deflected off a Stars defender for the first corner of the game, and Pirates could not capitalise from that early set-piece. Lungu came close to opening the scoring for Pirates in the 15th minute when he connected well with the ball from a Simphiwe Masilela corner kick, but his diving header narrowly missed the target as the ball shaved the net. Pirates continued to look menacing going forward, and in the 19th minute Yanela Mbuthuma drew a save from goalkeeper Mervin Kasetur after being found by a defence-splitting pass from Tshepamg Moremi. Sipho Chaine, who was more of a spectator in the opening 30 minutes, was finally forced into a rare save against the run of play in the 34th minute, and he did well to keep his team in the game. The sides were locked at 0-0 at the half-time break. Pirates kept up the attacking pressure in the second half and were finally rewarded in the 75th minute when Moremi put them in the lead following a nice build-up from the back. Stars tried hard to get the equaliser in the closing minutes of the match by putting Pirates under tremendous pressure, but the Buccaneers’ defence stood strong until the end to make sure that they earned the vital win away from home. The sides will meet again in the second leg in Soweto next Friday. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs suffered a 1-0 defeat against Red Arrows in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second round in Ndola. Alassane Diarra scored the winner with a free header from a corner kick. Amakhosi have all to do when they meet the Zambian side in the second leg at home next Friday.

MPs raise alarm after Home Affairs bought kiosks that remain unused
Home Affairs has come under scrutiny over self-service kiosks that it bought but never deployed, with Parliament questioning the money spent on the devices, ongoing licence costs and delays in delivering promised services. The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs has postponed a briefing on the project after the department’s director-general and chief financial officer (CFO) failed to attend a scheduled meeting on Saturday. The committee said the two senior officials needed to account for the project, which was launched in May 2024, amid conflicting information about its progress. During an oversight visit to Pretoria, committee members found that kiosks had been procured but not deployed, raising concerns about whether the investment was delivering any benefits to the public. Chairperson Mosa Chabane said the committee needed a clear account of the procurement process, project timelines and expenditure before it could properly assess the initiative. “We took this decision mindful of the investment that has already been made and the conflicting accounts previously provided to the committee. “To obtain a clear picture of the project, its timelines and the procurement already undertaken, it was important to have these two senior officials brief the committee,” Chabane said. Licence costs and service delivery questioned The committee is concerned about the costs of maintaining licences for kiosks that remain undeployed, as well as the implications of the delays. The project was launched with promises of improved services, but the committee said it remained unclear whether those benefits were being realised. “The committee’s concerns remain, and it is important that the department is held accountable for the project, especially because of the promises of improved services made during the launch,” Chabane said. The committee did not provide details of the total amount spent on the kiosks or the cost of maintaining their licences. The absence of the director-general and CFO meant the committee could not obtain the answers it considered necessary to establish the project’s status and hold the department accountable. Incomplete Home Affairs offices also flagged The kiosk project was not the only matter on which the committee said the department had failed to provide adequate information. “The department was also unable to provide a clear report on the status of incomplete modern offices, as requested by the committee,” it said. Earlier this year, the committee visited the Sibasa office in Limpopo, where members found clear evidence that work had not been completed. “The committee will reconvene the briefing at the earliest opportunity to ensure that all outstanding concerns are comprehensively addressed and that the department is held fully accountable for the management and implementation of the project,” the committee said.

Chiefs defended deep, still conceded in Confederation Cup loss to Red Arrows
Kaizer Chiefs were looking to make history against Red Arrows today (17 October). Instead, the Amakhosi are trailing after a 0-1 loss in the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round. Here’s what went down at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. Kaizer Chiefs vs Red Arrows not shown live The club confirmed today (17 October) that the match would not be broadcast. Chiefs said this was due to Red Arrows being unable to provide the SABC with the means to air the game. Updates were instead relegated to live coverage by social media and live scoring sites. The lack of updates on the match frustrated fans on social media. Some questioned if Chiefs were losing, while others debated the XI for the first leg. The Amakhosi relied on a strong defensive unit, as confirmed on social media. CAF Confederation Cup: Second Preliminary Round 1st Leg: Red Arrows vs. Kaizer ChiefsStarting 11: Leaner, Monyane, Miguel, Moloisane, Cross, Mako, Frosler, Mthethwa, Shabalala, Vilakazi, BaartmanSubs: Bvuma, Dortley, Nkgwesa, Mabaso, Velebayi, Abrahams, Ighodaro, Da Silva,… pic.twitter.com/rtAIgTYqKp— Kaizer Chiefs (@KaizerChiefs) October 17, 2026 Chiefs announced their starting lineup as follows: Leaner; Cross, Moloisane, Miguel, Monyana; Mako, Frosler, Mthethwa, Vilakazi; Shabalala, Baartman. How the game went down Chiefs lost Thabiso Monyane early in the game due to an injury. Thulani Mabaso replaced him after just half an hour, marking yet another concern for Fernando da Cruz. The game remained goalless after the first 45 minutes. Flavio da Silva replaced Luke Baartman as the teams came on for the second half. Mfundo Vilakazi and Mduduzi Shabalala were replaced by Wandile Duba and Etiosa Ighodaro at 71 minutes. 5 minutes later, Red Arrows opened the scoring with a Alassane Diarra header from a corner set piece. The game ended in a lacklustre 0-1 win for the hosts, taking a lead into the second leg on 23 October. Chiefs now need to salvage a win at the FNB Stadium to keep their Confederation Cup dream alive. ‘Exempted from any further taxes’: Pensioners make bold demand
South Africans who spent their working lives paying tax believe retirement should come with a reward, and one commenter has called for a change that would put more money back in pensioners’ pockets. The suggestion emerged during a lively debate about pensions on The South African’s Facebook page. A clean break from tax Jacques Burger proposed a bold solution. “If you retire after paying tax your whole working life you should be exempted from any further taxes,” he wrote. His comment speaks to retirees who live on private pensions, retirement annuities or savings and still see tax deducted from that income. SARS already gives older taxpayers some relief through higher tax thresholds from age 65 and again from 75, but many retirees feel these concessions fall short when living costs keep climbing. ‘They paid their taxes’ Marianna De Bruin Schmidt backed the idea that older persons have already done their part. “I agree these pensioners paid their taxes so deserve to have a decent liveable pension,” she wrote. Shantell Scheepers argued that seniors deserve far more than they currently receive: “In my opinion Seniors the eldery should have the full right to R6000.” Their views highlight two groups of older South Africans who feel let down: those relying on private income who want lower taxes, and those depending on the Older Persons Grant, which increased to R2 400 per month from April 2026. Working South Africans push back Not everyone agreed. Simm Vuzi warned that someone must carry the cost. “No offence but who’s footing that bill, we’re already paying high taxes as it is,” he wrote. Franza von Horsten asked: “Where will all the money come from?” Their concern points to a hard truth. Every tax break for retirees and every grant increase shifts more of the burden onto a shrinking pool of working taxpayers. The debate leaves government with a difficult balancing act: honouring the contribution of older South Africans while keeping the tax system fair for those still in the workforce.
